The dreaded 'Blue Screen of Death'...

    Hi folks,

Looking for some advice/help please :)

So, turned on my laptop today and find it won't boot up, it pauses on the windows logo then eventually goes to the BSOD. I've tried the 'repair' option that pops up when I boot up in last known working config (or whatever it's called), I've tried system restore also with no results. When I try starting in safe mode it lists through data on the screen then hangs at an AVG antivirus software file before crashing.

    It's a win 7 laptop. I don't think it's a virus as it's well-maintained/protected, and I really hope it's not a hdd failure as I haven't backed up my latest work... :(

The last two updates I recall were AVG software and a windows update, but not sure in which order.

As there's no disc-drive on the laptop I can't run any discs either. Anybody know of any USB bootable software I can run/boot from to try and recover my files and/or fix my machine with?

I've looked at Hiren's BootCD but that doesn't seem to have been updated in years...

All help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

    BSOD error code:

    STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A98E8, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x000000000000000)

    Try this site
http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ as for your problem it could be a number of issues, unless I saw the dump file from the crash it's hard to make a call as to what caused the problem. Also have a look at this site https://community.landesk.com/support/message/61281 as they seem to have a similar problem to yours.

for usb windows you can use Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, which actually is for installing windows7. With that possibly you can use to fix the mbr, which could be the issue, or other options. There is UBCD wgich stays up-to-date as opposed to hirens. Or us the 200's
program to boot a live linux cd to see if you can see the files with it. Try to not keep booting the windows or you may lose data.

All-in-all UBCD is good to have.

    Hey guys,

Many thanks for your suggestions / help.

So, I still have the exact same BSOD error occurring, even after the following list of fix attempts:

    - I installed a windows 7 recovery disc ISO on a USB stick and attempted to fix the issue with that, but to no avail (I've ran Startup Repair over 30+ times at this point).

    - I ran system restore from the recovery disc but that only ran for a short while then offered an error message (only one restore point available, which was from the last windows patch update - and around the time the laptop crashed...), I've also ran this multiple times but still get the same outcome.

    - When using Startup Repair it mentioned having found one error - and now it states 'Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully'....?!

    - I ran a CHKDSK and that reported no errors using Command Prompt.

    - I ran system file checker using Command Prompt, no issues here either.

    - I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic with no issues reported here also.

    - I used a USB-bootable version of Ubuntu and backed-up all my personal files in case I'll need to run a fresh install. Ran a couple of test options that were on that disc also (think they were memory-related tests) but nothing showed up as having any errors.

    - I used paragon backup and recovery USB software to check the MBR and ran the various tests on that, no errors appeared here either. I also ran MBR checks using Command Prompt on the recovery disc menu.

    - As I'd updated my AVG anitivirus software around the time of the issues I used the AVG recovery CD to attempt to fix any issues with drivers related to the last update (basically went in to the registry and changed the .sys to .old as instructed by their website). To no avail overall.

    - Booting in Safe Mode stalled halfway thru each time, then went to blue screen error messages. The first stall was on an AVG driver (this stopped after using the AVG recovery method as outlined above.) After that it stalled on classpnp.sys. then another time it stalled on disk.sys (or something similar). Now, after going back through all the steps mentioned above it's stalled at an AVG Driver AGAIN!!!

Any ideas what it might be? I'd prefer not to have to do a fresh OS install if possible as that will cause issues with my iTunes / jailbroken iPhone... :(

    Cheers folks

Well in my experience, a reinstall is the easiest solution when it takes more software, when trying this and that takes more time than it would than to just start everything over. Helps give some more perspective to know your system and program installs/settings overall.
