hi this is my first post here so go easy now ha

I have a 2002 transit panel van that I've owned for a while now and I was wondering if anyone can guide me to someone who would know if it is legal to cut the rear of and fit a recovery body, I was looking for one but they are a bit pricey at the moment and I know my van inside and out,

if anyone has any info it would be very appreciated

Wouldn't these be using a transit chassis cab as a base?

Use a chassis cab, Way too much hassle/messing to chop the back off a van to convert one.

Ya I would like to use a chassis cab but can't find one with a decent price tag on it, and I know my van inside and out

They're completely different though. The chassis cab is designed to have stuff bolted onto it, and is rear wheel drive, and has a cab with a back on it etc.

What about fitting a hydraulic lift on the chassis at the back and mount a winch on it ?

Two wheels on the ground kind of job ?

my transit is rear wheel drive and I understand the body bolts on the frame, map looking to completely remove my body and build a recovery body, I just want to know is it legal to cut existing body

What sort of payload is it going to leave once a flatbed and hydraulic system have been added?

Would that need a change of particulars and possibly a cert from a engineer to say works carried out are up to scratch?
Could it have insurance problems as you are supposed to notify of any modifications?
Rerouting fuel brake lines if mounted to Underbody?
Is it lwb or swb?swb might be to small
    Sounds like a interesting project.

So much easier just buy a Chassis Cab or already converted Recovery....

By the time the back is cut off, A new bulkhead sourced and welded on and then putting a body on it after, What's it going to cost?

What model is it and is it twin or single wheel?

sell what you have and buy bare chassis and add on the recovery bodyit will be the least amount of hassle apart from just buying a revovery truck.
i would say you could easy throw 2k at your van to convert it and still run into problems

its a long wheel base and Ya it would be a good project, I may call someone tomorrow and find out can I

Awful waste of money, you'll give 3 or 4 grand for a decent, light, beaver tail.
