you make sure you have a receipt showing you just bought it, make a VRT appointment at the NCTS, take the paperwork in, pay €200. No NCT required. As said, job done.

The above 2 pieces of advice very differnt, the in the uk bit could prove tricky if they look for ferry tickets, but I suppose its unlikely on a 67 spitfire

They don't look for ferry tickets, only customs might if you were stopped driving around

They can ask for ferry tickets as proof of when it entered the Country, if it came from the Other Island. That they don't always doesn't mean they wont.

Aw cork ya have me worried again now, whats the worst case scenario for classic with a year overdue registration

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

It's peanuts at the worst on a classic , and as it's peanuts, it's unlikely they will bother too much. However, it needed stating that they do sometimes ask for ferry tickets. In all probability you'll be fine with a handwritten receipt with the appropriate date on

Just need the info before I approach the seller , to beat him down on price presuming the car is not a heap

You will not need a ferry ticket and you will not be responsible for any backdated Vrt from previous owner.
you need a invoice from seller with the date on it which will be the date you are responsible for any Vrt costs unless you decide to sell

Still not conviced, he cannot sell me a car with english plates which he has for 12 months, strictly speaking, supposed to be regd within 30 days

vrt from date you buy it give revenue a ring to clarify and for better piece of mind but i am 100% sure of this from registering a good few cars and one lately that was here for a couple of years.
even if the current owner decided to register it its 0.02% per day or something stupid like that

Dharn, I have bought several cars here that were U.K. or N/I Reg. Get an dated invoice from the seller, and produce that at the N.C.T. centre, with the V5, Driving Licence or Passport, Household bill, PPS No. on official headed paper, & E200. They probably wont be able to clear it on the day, as it is old and may not be on their system, in which case, they will contact you in a few days, you then return to the N.C.T. centre, pay them, they give you the new reg. No. ( You have to tall them if you want a County Reg. No. or the ZV Reg. ) and the form for taxing it. I hope this re-assures you. If you have any further queries, phone me.
