Should I upgrade from Snow Leopard

I have a 21" iMac running Snow Leopard. I use it predominantly with Photoshop and LR as I do a lot of photography.

i see that OS X Yosemite is out now. I have never upgraded as I find 10.6.8 Snow Leopard is fine for me and everytime there is an upgrade in OS X I see nothing but problems with the new OS and people giving out and sharing horror stories.

But should I upgrade at this stage ?

Well you're playing with fire when it comes to security fixes by running such an old OS. Lion and, to a lesser extent, Mountain Lion has their issues at launch but Mavericks was a solid release with impressive battery life improvements. This won't affect your iMac tho.

Yosemite is a radical departure to the look and feel of the OS, I would recommend the Ars review for a good overview go how things have changed.

What year is your iMac? It might be worth moving to Mavericks at least.

I bought it 2nd hand last year but I think its about 3 years old. Where do I see what year it is ?

My brother in law is a Mac/Apple lover but after he upgraded to Mavericks on his Macbook I thought he was going to move to Windows cos he had so many problems

This post has just come in from one of the members in the camera club.

"Anyone having problems with Nik plugins crashing Photoshop on OS X Yosemite?"

Click the Apple icon at the top left and select "About This Mac". You may have to look in the Hardware section of System Report.
Apple treat their various models almost like cars. Your iMac may be a mid 2010 model or a late 2009 for example. See here.

TBH some people are going to have issues and most people are not. You will hear a lot more from the few that do. Mavericks ran absolutely perfectly on my old 2010 13" Macbook Pro. The only issue I had with Yosemite was a file permission issue with Premiere Pro.

Runs well on my 08 laptop, although putting an SSD in made a big difference.

i would not advised jumping from 10.6 to 10.10 that is a massive jump.
If you have a lot of 3rd party apps you will run into trouble.

On the flip side a lot of those apps now hhave several iterations of bugfixes in place.
