Problem with insurance

    Hey guys
I'm having some difficulty getting my no claims bonus back from my previous insurer
Basically I missed my last payment and had several months left on the policy, and they refused to give me my no claims until I pay this money
Sadly I just don't have it, and needed to be back on the road so I got a new policy with aa
Since then I've had the aa cancel my policy twice because I couldn't give them the no claims cert

I'm on social welfare and can't pay the previous company, I've just rang them trying to get the proof, tried the data protection act and also tried to say how they cancelled the contract, not me

Is there any advice anyone can give me?
I'm stuck in county clare so I need cover ASAP otherwise I'm completely stranded, there's no bus service out here at all

At the risk of asking the obvious, how can you afford to pay AA yet you say you are unable to pay your previous insurer?

NCB are issued at the end of the policy term, you didn't reach the end as you did not pay. You are not entitled to the benefit of a NCB from your previous insurer.

Although if you have been insured with them for more than one year I presume you should get the NCB until the end of the last year.

I understand that in your current situation it can be hard to make ends meet, & considering that running a car is not cheap even for someone on an average wage it's not surprising that something 'had to give' at some stage. However, I doubt if this is really a legal issue - check the T&Cs of your policy & no doubt the consequences of non-payment are covered in no uncertain terms.

It's really more of a finance & budgeting issue imo, & for what it's worth you have limited options, bearing in mind that you are going to have to service the debt somehow in order to get the no claims cert.

    1) Do you have a family member who could loan you the money until you get on your feet? This is probably the easiest solution in terms of where you'll get the money.
    2) If realistic can you sell the car & buy a cheaper one?
    3) This is a long shot & probably not a realistic option: try approaching your local DSP representative (formerly known as a CWO) & see if they could see their way to issue you with an Exceptional Needs Payment as a once-off, but usually these payments are made to people struggling with arrears on gas or electric bills, but there is a little bit of descretion involved & perhaps if you suggested that you'd find it impossible to attend interviews in order to gain employment you might be lucky - but that's a very big 'might'.
    4) Engage with MABS who may be able to help you tackle any other debts that you may have resulting in you having some extra money available to service the debt.
    5) Speak to SVDP & see if they can help in any way.

You also have to face the cold hard reality that even if you do raise the money somehow, going forward can you realistically afford to pay new insurance premiums, even ones that allow for your NCB. You're still going to have to maintain the car, petrol/diesel, motor tax, NCT as well as any unexpected expenses. You may have to consider getting what you can for the car & paying off the debt from the proceeds & relocating to an area where you can commute to & from a job either on foot, bicycle, moped or public transport. It might be the only way to dig yourself out of the current (hopefully temporary) hole that you find yourself in. I realise this a harsh option but as it is you're not in a very good situation so doing that might not be any worse, especially if you don't have a debt hanging over your head.
