Hi, I was going to put this in the taxation section but I thought people here might know more on the topic. If not you can move it.

I was seeing a counsellor for about 6 months this year and paying them weekly. On the last session they told me that I could claim back some of my payments when completing my tax returns. Is that true and what forms etc have to be filled does anyone know?

    Thanks.

Ok, will I open a thread there and you close this?

Ok, thanks to Julius Caesar for the corrct form. I've gone through it but like most of this tax shtuff I'm still confused. Do I need to have receipts for each session? I'm not actually sure of the amount I paid, I wasn't keeping tabs.

Yes you need to have receipts -- or a statement from the practitioner but you only need to hold onto them --- they do not go wiith the claim

easiest way is to register for paye anytime on revenue.ie (assuming you are an employee and not self employed) and claiming it through that - good vids and instructions there

google med1 and on the form it tells you what you can claim for

You might need to wait until 2015 to claim for 2014

You will only get a refund if you have actually paid tax

    Hi

The situation with regard to claiming tax back on counselling is clear, you cannot claim tax back unless you attend a medical qualified person or a psychologist i.e (child psychologist for children)they have to be registered with the H.S.E. The vast majority of counsellor's are not medically qualified or registered with the H.S.E and hence you will not get tax back after attending one.
I have gone through this process (with a claim ~2k) last year I sent a query to Revenue and they would not give tax back unless the above is satisfied.
I am sorry to have to give you this news counsellor's should have this information at hand.
This information is true for the year 2012 tax returns if the rules have changed since then I am unaware of the change.

    Best wishes
