Dodgy wireless card or bad RAM?

I purchased a refurbished Thinkpad T410 and installed some second hand RAM I got on adverts. Everything seemed fine until today when I tried playing a HD mkv from my NAS. In VLC playback froze, repeated and then stopped. In XBMC it just froze and quit. It plays fine for a few minutes each time.

I'm wondering is it the RAM or could it be the wireless card? I tried playing the same file from a tablet in the same area of the house and there was no problem. I've noticed no other problems whatsoever but I have only being web browsing. I checked the RAM with MemTest86 when it arrived and it passed.

Not sure what the problem is. Hope I don't have to return the laptop as I like it and I imported it from Germany!!!!

Which Model is it, I mean which GPU? The Nvidia NVS 3100M or the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD?

It's the one with the Intel graphics. It couldn't be that surely? Previously I was using an ancient x61 and that was fine.

No, it wouldn't be. I was asking because I wanted to check something else.
    What OS do you have?

If it's Windows, uninstall the Intel HD drivers, and remove them, and restart the laptop.
Let windows install it's own drivers for it.

  • Ah I see. It's actually Windows 7 Pro. I did what you suggested but the problem occurred again. However I went further and downloaded a driver update program (IOBit Driver Booster 2) and updated every driver I could. I played something for twenty minutes and it was fine. I had to stop as I had to attend to real life...

I'll give it a go again tomorrow but hopefully it's fixed and thank you! :) If not see you tomorrow!! :D

    I'll be here... :o

Yeah, I'd say it's driver issue alright. I also remember a similar thread in here somewhere and it was releated to the Intel HD driver. The newer one causing all sorts of problems.

Other fault areas are the VLC decoder, the encoder used to create the video, or the NAS drive.

Copying the file from your NAS to your hard drive and trying to run from there would be one test.
Look at the detailed view during the file transfer to see if it stalls anywhere.

The video codec on the tablet might be playing at a different resolution or be designed for more flaky network transfers with more buffering than VLC.
