All I can find are expensive rentals or ones online on Amazon.

Tried all the conventional stores: Smyths, Hamleys, Toymaster etc.

    Any suggestions?

Why not go to a DIY place and buy the appropriate timber. Most of them will even cut the pieces to size for you. Is a commercially available giant Jenga something other than a few dozen bits of timber?

I've seen people playing this occasionally and I've always wondered is there not a significant chance of someone getting brained by a 2x4 when it collapses?

There's a game called Bausack that is a little like Jenga. It has a number of different ways to play and in some of them each person builds their own tower. This means the slightly unsatisfying end of Jenga where there is basically one loser instead of winner, second place etc is avoided. DIY giant Bausack would be awesome in my opinion. :)
