Starter cuts out when cranking.

    My dad has an '05 Octavia. The starter works for a few turns of the engine but then disengages from the flywheel after a second or 2 but remains spinning as normal. Is it the solenoid switch?

    Solenoid is a high amperage switch has nothing to do with the gearing. Once the starter is spinning the solenoid had done its job.

    The starting trust gear is spring loaded.
    Once the starter is spinning fast enough the trust gear moves forward and engages fly wheel. When power is removed from starter the spring pushes trust gear away from flywheel.

    It would appear your starter is faulty and solenoid and starter are sold as one unit. So not worth trying to diagnose solenoid or starter

    Sounds like the clutch is gone in the pinion, 40 quid fix with starter in hand.

    Solenoid's are sold separately or contact and plunger kits for built in solenoids.
