Redundancy Questions

This has probably been asked a million times before but searches I did, didnt bring up specific answers to my questions.

I was told on Monday (over the phone) that the job I have been in for nearly 6 years is being sold and that after xmas I will be surplus to requirements!
Redundancy was never mentioned, he did say that he would keep me on until I got another job, but it got me thinking after the shock wore off.
If I stay until I get another job is that just the same as me handing in my notice? While my boss is a nice guy I dont feel he is aware of my rights in this situation, or maybe I am in the wrong. I dont want to stay where I am not needed/wanted out of pity

    So my question is:
Am I entitled to redundancy? At the end of December my job will no longer be there.

sorry if i'm not explaining myself very well, its just such a shock, I was told my job was safe 4 weeks ago and now i'm being let go!!

Any help/advise is greatly appreciated. I have checked citizens information website and know the rates of payment etc, thanks

My sympathies to you on the loss of your job. I was made redundant last week so I understand how you feel. AFAIK you are entitled to redundancy as your job will no longer exist.
You should find plenty of info here
    http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Redundancy-Payments.aspx
I would suggest giving them a call, they were very helpful.

Negotiating your redundancy with your employer is not easy. Mine eventually pleaded inability to pay so I had to claim statutory from the Dept of Social Protection. Do your research before you go into talk with him. Stay positive, there is life beyond your current job. I'm exploring completely different avenues and am quite surprised with what's out there. Feel free to pm me if it helps.

Thanks Jos, I will hopefully speak to him next week, we dont work from the same office.

the part of the business I work for is getting sold but the remainder of the business is doing well, should I ask for more than statutory or is it up to him to offer?

6yrs is a long time to work for someone (its the longest job I've had) but I do feel like its time for a change, so maybe its the kick I need.

Is your part of the business being bought by another company in Ireland who will continue running it?

I would haggle for as much as you can get. Do a bit of research and see what packages other companies gave.
