Some I know just got stuck at a UK airport overnight with no money. I'm looking to book a flight home for them tomorrow. At the moment the best option seems to be FlyBe but since they have no access to printing etc. does anyone know if they can just rack up to the check-in desk with a confirmation number to check in?

With Flybe you won't even need the confirmation number usually. No need to check in in advance. That is generally a Ryanair thing.

    Worst case scenario, consider Sailrail.

I've never used it, but if they are going to extract ridiculous amounts of money from you, it may be worthwhile. Not sure of the logistics of using it with your friend, but it might help.

I suspect it'd be impossible to get the ticket paperwork *to* the stranded person.

I've used SailRail, it's much simpler. Yes, it's going to take longer but you're guaranteed to make connections, it's cheap and smooth. Alternatively, I'm sure BE will understand the situation. Ring them and explain and I'd say they would sort everything. And if they don't? Joe Duffy's your man. ;) SailRail tickets can be bought at train stations if my mind serves me.

They were stuck at the airport so even getting back into a city would've been hassle.
Flight is sorted and all anyway.

Mind me asking how much it cost at the last minute?

If they've no money, that's not going to be an option either.

The vast majority of airlines provide non-surcharged checkin desks (I was going to say 'free' but its covered in the ticket price clearly), if they are an option its a lot easier than trying to run around like a headless chicken to fly on the few (or one, on most routes to Ireland) that don't in this specific scenario.

Have you actually spoken to them. There are a lot of scams that use hacks into peoples email or facebook and use this scenario to get money from people.

They live with me and were coming home and the ticket was booked directly in their name so I think it was safe. Unless the hackers got to them too. :P I've been online longer than 95% of people, I've seen 'em all. :P

I've had one of those sent in my name, I was extremely happy to see the number of people who called me to check if i was OK. None fell for the scam.

I've got to ask how your friend ended up stranded at the airport with no money at all and no flight home?

Missed the flight that they had booked and a lot of people don't have enough money to buy a last minute ticket.
