Have the tiptronic in a 525i bmw and love it.

Mostly drive it in auto but if wanting to push the car the tiptronic is a nice extra

dont think I ever go back to manual now

By titpronic, do you simply mean flappy paddles or do you see the difference between s tronic (DSG type twin clutch box) and multitronic (CVT box)?

All I can say is.. do it!! :p

I have a 05 3L Quattro A6 with tiptronic and the flappy paddles and it's just fantastic! Never use the flappy paddles myself though as I find the box is more than capable of handling itself.

Over a year later and I still get a smile driving it every day :)

+1 .. i think once you have the experience of driving a decent modern auto (DSG/tiptronic) paired to an engine that suits it, you'd be mad to go back

Sorry I dont have a clue what this means!

The 03/04 1.9tdi A6 automatic tiptronic doesnt appear to have paddles, just a +/- on the gear lever. I have no experience of auto or tiptronic, only manual bar driving an auto once in a blue moon.

of the 03/04 A6's I've seen on done deal, the ones with the best spec are auto and about half of the cars on donedeal of this age are auto tiptronic. Are the audi auto-boxes reliable? I wont be doing huge miles just want something big and comfie for small money - have driven my brothers 05 a4 at times and its a lovely car to drive. currently have a 04 mondeo ghia 1.8 which is grand but a bit flat, and fancy an audi.

I, like Visual have an E39 525i TipTronic and absolutely love it, it's pretty responsive for an auto, I don't really use the Manual mode as it's good in it's own Sport mode. I'm not sure how fast I'd be in going back to a Manual car.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that's the multitronic box.

Can give trouble and not that well regarded. So go in with your eyes open. My aul fella had one and was disastrous for him.

Thanks bd2012 but I cant correct because I dont know, most the 03/04's seem to be advertised as 'tiptronic', I havn't seen them listed as 'multitronic'

Well as far as I know the standard automatic audi gearbox from those years was multitronic. Again maybe I'm wrong and someone can please tell me otherwise but I would be thinking in a 03/04 1.9tdi a6 it's probably a multitronic.

Ps. Have a 02 a6 1.9 tdi myself - manual though. Almost 250,000 miles up and never missed a beat. Robust engine but those gear boxes can be weak I'm afraid :(

If it's a 2wd A6 then it's a multitronic box, tiptronic was only available in quattro models and there was never a quattro 1.9 tdi A6.

Personally if you haven't already bought it i would avoid it, if you have bought it good luck :D

A gearbox specialist advised me recently that Audi multitronic boxes should be avoided at all costs - they're very unreliable and expensive to repair.

In general, modern day auto transmissions are very reliable and a joy to use.

Further, if buying an A6/5 series/E class or above, auto would be expected by most buyers at resale time.

That's no accident they're listed like that. ..... get the VIN number and check with an Audi dealer.

Was looking for an auto estate lately and could find no Audi of that age that was not Multitronic. Only Quattro of that age has a 'real' tiptronic box.

Too many problems with multitronic imho.

Older ones did have the real tiptronic one, so only way to be sure is via a VIN check. If it happens to be a real tiptronic it's a great box. Highly recommended.

Still just looking at the moment, wouldn't mind auto for a change but not major issue - although the autos all tend to have best spec, which isn't the case with all the manuals l have seen. Thanks all for the info sofar

Best of luck. They're a solid comfy mile muncher with a fairly bulletproof engine if properly maintained. But as stated by others steer clear of the multitronic
    Good hunting!
