Am I entitled to the dole?

Sorry if this has been asked a hundred times but looked through search and can't find an answer to my specific situation

I left Ireland in 2009 and returned 4 weeks ago.

Before I left I worked professionally, paying all relevant taxes etc for eight years. (I realize this may not be relevant)

I've heard if you are out of the country for more than two years and not paying prsi that you are not entitled to the dole...Is this the case?

If so...how long do I have to wait to eligible. I am actively seeking work

    any advice appreciated

Thanks, I'll give it a go...someone else suggested this but heard I wasn't eligible...I suppose the only way to find out for sure is to visit the office, apply and talk to someone

You won't qualify for a benefit payment but may still be entitled to the means tested Jobseekers Allowance.

Can you explain that a bit more? Sorry...first time signing on and more I know before going into the office the better, thanks

Benefit is based on your previous Prsi record from two years before you sign on so because of the amount of time you're gone your won't get that.

Allowance is means tested. This means that they will look for details of income, savings, investments, property etc that you may have. Its basically just an extra set of questions to determine what your rate of pay will be. If your means are zero you get the same as you would on benefit.

    Hope that helps. :)
