Gardaí in North Tipperary are appealing for witnesses following a vicious assault on a vulnerable man in Nenagh in broad daylight.

Jack Looney was set up by a number of teenagers during which he suffered multiple kicks to the head and body.

Family members have branded it attempted murder and fear if the culprit isn't caught then they could strike again.

Speaking on Tipp Today in the aftermath of a savage assault on his brother - Donal Looney expressed shock and concern over the behaviour of the school going culprits allegedly involved in this incident.

Jack Looney - who his family describe as vulnerable was walking his small dog towards his mother's home in Nenagh on Friday October 10th when he was set upon by a group of youths in uniform at Andy Bourke's corner near Saint Joseph's Park.

The 52 year old was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked as he lay in the foetal position protecting the small dog under him.

He suffered extensive cuts and bruises and lost all of his teeth during the attack and was treated at University Hospital Limerick.

The incident happened in broad daylight in full view of a number of witnesses including school children and Donal feels somebody knows the culprits involved

Nenagh gardaí have launched an investigation into this violent assault but if people want to give information anonymously they can contact the garda confidential line 1800 666 111.

Local Councillor Seamie Morris who personally knows Jack Looney says it’s an appalling attack on a vulnerable harmless person and is urging those who may be protecting the culprits to do the right thing and come forward

While Jack's brother Donal fears he's brother may never recover from what was a total unprovoked, terrifying and potential life threatening assault.

Population of 4.5 million people broken because of a few scumbags? Ehhh I don't think so.

The majority of people are good. A couple of scumbags doesn't change this, they're found in every society.

I wish this man a good recovery and hope they gets what's coming to the little cnuts.

The amount of scumbags in this country is nearly out numbering the amount of decent people

What we have is a breakdown in values in modern society. Since people in authority were forbidden to use corporal punishment because in the past some of them abused it unduly. Now you have a situation that , apart from Gardai, Army and prison officers and in some rare cases, bouncers, most people in authority positions are given no proper sanctions which they can use to impose order in a judicious and intelligent way. The rougher elements of society know this too well and have become more audacious and bolder as time passes. It may come to pass that corporal punishment and other more robust sanctions may be reintroduced in a panic measure to restore order to an increasingly chaotic situation. The real scumbags won't care because they are usually cunning enough to avoid any consequences by avoiding improper actions or offences when someone is watching. As in the past the real victims of such a reaction would be the slow witted, vulnerable people because they will be easy targets, easily detected and easily punished without any consequences for the punisher.

This situation will not be easily solved but having foot patrols by gardai in such towns would be a start.
