It might be disabled in device manager.

Right click on Computer, select Properties. Top left, click Device Manager. Expand (click on the plus) beside "imaging devices" and right click and "enable". May need to reboot.

Thanks but there is no "imaging devices" on which to click.

If it's not there, you can click Action then "scan for hardware changes", that might pick it up if it's not in the list.

Sorry, it's at the top of the Device Manager list. Click "Action", then "Scan for hardware changes".

Double check to see if the list then contains any "imaging devices".

Should ask too are you running windows 7 or 8/8.1?

    OK,

    Click Start.
    Right click Computer.
    Click Properties.
    (top left) Click Device Manager.
When Device Manager starts, click Action (at top), then Scan for Hardware Changes (you may need to click anywhere on the devices to view that option).

It should pick up the webcam as Imaging Devices.

You may also need to reboot afterwards.

    Let us know.

Done that but no imaging devices. Could the drive have been deleted altogether?

Is it an internal (built in) or external (usb) camera?

What make/model is the laptop (there should be a label on the bottom that gives model no.).
