Long term unemployed?

I signed on for jobseekers benefit last November. I got a 4 month contract over the summer but am now signing back on again and this claim has been linked and a continuance of my jobseekers benefit entitlement from the first claim. So I'm wondering if come this Novemver am I classified as 'long ten unemployed' or would my unemployment time be 'restarted' from this month when I signed back on?

Thought came to me when I saw that the Christmas bonus will only be paid to long term unemployed but there's also certain course entitlements etc that seem to only apply after a year.

I think that after 13 weeks stamps you will have the full term of JSB.

Yes I'll qualify again for jsb which is great, but my query is whether because I've gone back on a linked claim do my previous days on that claim carry forward for do my days unemployed restart from zero. For example for back to education allowance on a degree you have to first be getting jsb for 9 months, so I'm wondering if my previous unemployment on the linked claim would still add into this or will I now have to have another 9 months claiming before I can apply for something like that?

A linked claim just means that you qualify for the same rate of JSB that you were previously being paid. In other words for a linked claim the JSB amount you receive will be based on your average weekly gross earnings in the relevant tax/contribution year that governed your original claim.

Long-term unemployment refers to continuous periods of unemployment extending for a year or longer, so a linked claim doesn't change the fact that you were actually employed for four months, as that is a break in your period of continuous unemployment. YOur time on JSB will start again for anything that you apply for as regards to education or training, as these requirements refer to being in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment for a specified period of time before you apply.

But, as always, it's best even if only for peace of mind to get official confirmation of this.

Thank you. It's very frustrating to want to try something like retraining to get back to employment only to be told you're not unemployed long enough. In my opinion the longer you're out of a job the harder it would be to get one and therefore waiting a year to start courses and then maybe another year or two doing them is not a great way of getting people back to work.
