I am thinking about a post July 2008 small van and it works out about €100 cheaper to tax privately. Does the van then need an nct or a doe ? Is there a difference in insurance costs?

    If it's private it's a nct
Insurance can vary so ringing is the only answer

3 times, and it's still wrong. Tax class has no bearing on whether a vehicle needs a DOE test, or CRVT test as it is now. If it's registered as a van, it needs a CRVT test.

Also, private tax on a commercial is based on engine size regardless of when it was registered.
