if you do it more than three months before the due date you will get 12 months disc. If you do it within three months before the due date, you will get up to 3/16

    Well, not necesserily January.
If car is due NCT on 5th March, then you can do it pretty much from around 5th December if I count it right.

Surely this depends on the year of the car, the OP hasn't said what age it is.
If it's now 9 years old and will hit it's 10th 'birthday' at the next NCT due date then get it tested in advance of 3 months before it's due date.
If the car is any older (or newer) then it makes no difference.

He implied it was over 10 years old

Where did he imply this ?

And if it is over 10 years old then he has nothing to gain from NCT'ing it early.....

For what length of time will the new cert (provided it passes) cover?

2 Years from the date of testing...if it's tested ahead of the 3 month window, and would be 10 years old at the next NCT due date.
In other words if a car is 9 years and 8 months old now it would get a 2 year Cert if tested today.....if it were tested next month it would get a Cert for 1 year and (just under) 3 months.

You'll get a two year cert. in that case if you do the test more than three months in advance. If a car is nine years old, the ideal time to do the test is when it's nine years and eight months old, then you will get a two year cert. dated from the date of the test, do it a month later and you'll get a cert. which expires one year after the due date i.e. which will expire when the car is 11 years old.

Example: Car is nine years old (2005) and due it's next test on March 1st 2015.

Passes test on November 1st, 2014, cert will be issued for two years from the test date, expiring on Nov 1st 2016.

Passes test on December 2nd 2014, counts as early test (<3 months before due date) so cert will be issued for one year from due date, expiring on March 1st 2016.

    Spot on.

He will get a cert valid until the next due date.
If he NCT's it 2 months (or 1 month) before renewal the expiry date will be exactly the same.

here "or will my next nct not be due until 03/16? "

and he does have something to gain should he be selling it...a brand new 12 month NCT dated yesterday....that's got to help a sale.
