Hi, I've been looking all over the place on this thought someone might have the answer right away.

I'm looking at buying a set of as new A6 18" Alloys. The tyres they used were 245/45/18 my tires are all the Audi recommended 235/30/18s. My question is will these alloys be OK for my tyres? Will the alloy need a wider tyre or will mine be too narrow - 10mm I didn't think would matter too much?

What size are the wheels you're looking at? There's a range of possible tyre sizes that'll fit a given pan width. You might be ok but you haven't given enough info here to get a reliable answer.

Thanks Chimaera so I need to find out the size of the Alloys width (Pan width?) basically to see? All I know is they are 18" and the tyres he had on them.

I'm hoping it will be OK If I were to ask them to measure the pan width and I measure mine here wouldn't that cover me? Not asking too much for them but don't want to get stung with alloys too big for my good tyres :)

It's probably stamped into the back of the wheel. It'll be _Jx18 where the number in front of the J is the width. It's worth checking the ET measurement too to make sure it's similar to your current wheels.

Thanks so much for your help. I'll ask them to check that part out. What is the ET measurement?

Two of my tyres are - Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 235/40 R18 95Y XL with rim protection (MFS) BLT (Su). I don't see the _Jx18 in that though would I need to look at back of the wheel to find out? They are factory fit sline RS6 alloys.

if they are original audi c5 rs6 18" alloys they are 18x8.5j, et30.

which makes em stick out a bit on most a4 or a6's.

you will need to look at the back of them to know for sure. do you have a spare? (if so btw they are not original RS6 wheels as the rs6 didnt come with a spare, but likely a sline wheel from a later generation)

Thanks yes they are original factory fitted RS6 alloy and you're right the spare is just a steely. Do you know that they are 18x8j et 30 or would I still need to take one off to look at the back of it?

This is the car if that helps.

Those look like the stock 19s that came on the C5 RS6. 18s on that model were very rare - they were mainly sold as a winter wheel.

Get the seller to take a picture of the back of the wheel and send it to you. It'll have all the information you need.

if they are the 19's then they are et35 iirc.

@chimaera, the stock wheels on the few RS6's sold originally in ireland were 18x8.5s, 19s were an option iirc. the UK ones all came with 19s by default, and the winter wheel was a 18x7.5, et20 wheel.

They are 18s for sure on mine not 19s. I've asked seller to check back of tire getting a photo is even better will ask for that too when I hear back.

it could be the winter wheel then - it was a 5 spoke like the one on your car.

the 18x8.5 stock (non winter wheel) was a 9 spoke (same wheel apart from the offset as the b5 rs4), and the 19x9 was a 5 spoke.

I said the back of the _wheel_, not the tyre!!!!

the 18x8.5 wheels took a 255 tyre stock, the x9 wheels took a 255 (stock), 265 or 275 (most common after market size, but requires some work with an angle grinder on your upper control arms).

the x7.5 wheel took a 225 tyre stock.

but as a note, there were a ton of sline cars sold with the "rs6" wheels over the years in 17 and 18" form, which while they are original audi, are not the original RS wheels. the RS wheels have a much lower offset than standard due to the wider track of the RS cars)

note: the stock 18 non winter was 18x8.5 (sorry - knew better but didnt check!)

Seller got back to me with "the code is 80j x 18H2 ET39" doesn't add up does it? Thanks again folks appreciate the help. I think they have the numbers mixed up?

    hey

so the tyre will fit allright - it might be a little low profile on those wheels, but should fit horizontally.

As to offsets, what car is it going onto? you would also have to check the centre bore size to make sure that its the same as your own car, or if you will need centering rings (some audis are 57.1mm, some are 66.56)

Thanks T that's good to hear anyways they would fit the tyre I'll be putting them on the B7 avant. Just need to check the bore size so? I'll have to ring Audi garage tomorrow to check that or I'll get it from Google maybe.

ET is the wheel offset: it's the spacing between the mounting flange of the wheel (the part that sits against the hub) and the centre of the tyre's contact patch on the ground. Changing it will affect where the wheel sits in the wheelarch for a start. It can also affect the steering geometry a little. If you're within 10 mm of stock, it shouldn't make too much difference.

For tyre sizes the calculator about halfway down the page here suggests that your tyre size (235/30 R18) can fit rims between 8 and 9.5 inches wide. (I'd have posted this earlier but been away from a PC all day)

    Hey

So those photos were of a b7 avant. If they are already on one then they fit bore wise.

If its newer than 2005 a6 it should be OK iirc but check the interwebs for a c6 a6 (or 4f as its sometimes called) bore size to be sure.
