Hi all currently working long term in UK so need to re register my car (a torturous process) and get insurance. I'm being quoted £800 as up to now I've always had a company car so I don't have any no claims history.

My car is a 2006 bmw 4 door saloon 320 diesel

Can anyone recommend a company who can give a good rate any help appreciated I recall a thread on here where someone else had done this

Your looking to insure the car in the UK with a UK insurance company?

If so not sure how many over here might be able to recommend a particular UK insurance company other than suggesting ringing around numerous insurance companies and brokers for the best price.

If you are re-registering the car from IE-UK plates you will need to get a policy which covers you on the chassis number. The only place I found was the broker Adrian Flux, and the policy I had only covered the car going to/from places which were required to get the car re-registered so be careful and read the small print! Mainstream insurers won't touch you. Of course once the car is registered you may be able to switch to a cheaper policy, albeit with a cancellation fee.

Was it a UK car originally? If so it's a bit easier as you don't need the certificate of conformity. The car should get its old UK plates back.

As you will be working in the UK long-term have you thought about selling the IE car, buying a car in the UK and bringing it back VRT-free on transfer of residence (assuming you haven't already done this in last 5 years)? Make sure you read up on the Revenue definitions and the evidence you have to provide first though :-)

Thanks SSE Confirms what I thought I have a quote from Adrian flux for £760 fully comp (I'm using the car for work)but as you say struggling to get an alternative.

The car is originally IE I've considered buying in UK but I've had the bmw from new so it would cost a lot more to get an equivalent replacement.ill probably just pay the £760

When I looked (Summer 2012) Adrian Flux were the only brokers who could offer this. I would make sure to check the policy carefully as mine was only valid for travel to/from the MoT centre until it was re-registered onto UK plates.

I think you have to do this NOVA thing now which we didn't need to do, adding another layer of complication. I'd honestly look at selling it in Ireland :)

    Update

Turns out I had some no claims so cost me £575 in the end the biggest surprise is that these are the only people that offer it.

Be aware that any car which was not originally bought in the UK will be loaded by UK Insurers.
Even if you were to sell the Beemer on to a UK Citizen they would pay more to insure this particular car than a 'UK' one.
This can make it difficult to sell your car in the future ( along with costing you more to insure)
    Just a heads up.:)

Possibly too late to be of use, but I imported my car when I emigrated to the UK 5 years ago. My IRL insurer would only extent cover for a measly three weeks so I encountered much the same problems trying to find a specialist broker for chassis insurance. The quotes were astronomical.

In the end............ Quinn Direct** UK saved me. They were very friendly towards cross-border business and didn't care what plates the car had, or what licence I held; they also honoured my ROI NCB with no quibbles.

Re-registering the vehicle here in the Uk was pretty easy. I got a pack from DVLA which I filled in and returned with a cheque for £50. I think I had to get some technical document from Renault but I seem to remember it was a single piece of paper and cost little or nothing. I had a new log book within a week, and Quinn Direct changed the car's plate over the phone.

** I know things have changed with Quinn; their new owners may not be as accommodating.
