First of all since you're new to this, don't go out and buy any games just because they sound good. Half of PC gaming is waiting for a good price.

To answer your questions - You've probably already played many titles on the consoles. What are you already interested in?

I normally play online shooters but I am an open book looking forward to trying new games and ways of playing out tbh

Yeah, you really need to make your own mind up on these things - high rated games by critics or plebs like me may not be what you enjoy playing.

Specific genres have some excellent games - but not everyone will agree on what's the 'must have' of each genre

Personally, i'd say something like the Mass Effect trilogy, but the original is dated, the second is a masterpiece and the third is the subject of notorious debate on if it's good or bad due in part to it's original ending. See where i'm going?

But if you're asking for each of our 'Must have's' to possibly base a purchase on, fair enough, keep in mind some titles are dated but are/were nonetheless awesome (to me at least).

I'd say the ME trilogy(RPG), Company of Heroes(RTS), Diablo 3(ARPG),Call of Duty 4(FPS) XCOM:Enemy Unknown/Within (TBS) The Walking Dead & The Wolf Among Us (Story based point and clickers) Rome:Total War (The original TBS/RTS) Left4Dead (FPS) Fallout 3 & New vegas (FPS/RPG) S.P.A.Z (2d space shmup/rpg) Terraria (2d version of minecraft) Wasteland2 (RPG TBS) and some freetoplay titles, like Warthunder(Flight/tank sim) and World of Tanks(Tank sim)

That's just off the top of my head and my tastes may be very different from yours or indeed anyone's

Some great games that have come out on PC in the past are the Witcher games, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (can be prettied with mods), Metro 2033, Black Mesa (Half Life remade with a newer engine)

It will also now give you a chance to play a genre that is sorely lacking on consoles and that is RTS games
Some of the best are Company of Heroes as mentioned, The Command and Conquer games, Starcraft games, World in Conflict, Supreme Commander games and the Total War Series of games

There is also a dearth of free FPS games that are insanely addictive such as Team Fortress 2, Planetside 2, Loadout, Hawken, Ghost Recon: Phantoms Firefall and Quake

Besides all that you have MOBA's such as League of Legends and DOTA 2, MMO's such as World of Warcraft and E.V.E. Online

here is the list of the top games being played on Steam right now with most of them being exclusives, and they are also having a free weekend to play some great games

    Current Players Peak Today Game

    643,890 821,660 Dota 2
    119,958 224,811 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
    63,112 72,435 Team Fortress 2
    38,097 43,422 PAYDAY 2
    33,095 64,791 Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
    27,290 41,054 Sid Meier's Civilization V
    25,569 50,423 PAYDAY: The Heist
    23,007 35,989 Garry's Mod
    22,805 31,635 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
    21,626 37,409 Football Manager 2014

Definitely give this a shot. Free. I actually enjoyed this more that other shooters I played at the time.

Here's some of the ones I've really enjoyed in recent years.

For shooters, I'd back up some of the suggestions above -
    • CS:GO isn't bad. I prefer the less serious servers rather than extreme competition, but it caters for both.
    • L4D2 - Great co-op shooter. Strategy and having your team's back is more important rather than amazing aim. Spend an hour or two getting the basics with bots before joining a public game!
    • Fallout 3 - Great game for getting lost in hours. Some really cool stuff. I didn't enjoy Fallout: New Vegas as much.
    • Payday/2 - Another good co-op game. I have to say that both fell short on my expectations when I first played, but they have a bit of a learning curve.
    • Serious Sam 3 - Complete mayhem.
    • Saints Row 3/4 - Not FPS, more like a GTA rip-off but much funnier.

Puzzles/Platforms. Most of these are indies, so you can find them cheap enough:
    • Trine 1/2 - Amazingly beautiful, colourful games. Can play co-op in both now. Not overly taxing, but provide a bit of a challenge.
    • Braid - Great Puzzler. Time manipulation taken the next step.
    • Limbo - Dark puzzle-platformer.
    • Thomas was alone. Simple, short puzzle game. Nice and relaxing.
    • VVVVVV - Commodore 64 type setting for a unique platform game.
    • The Walking Dead - Point and click adventure with a good story line. Way better than the series (yes, tough luck if you disagree).

    First person puzzlers
    • Orcs must die - 3D tower defence. Orcs must die 2 is great fun in co-op if you have someone to play with.
    • Antichamber - First person puzzle that really messes with your mind.
    • The Stanley Parable - Short game, funny... slight elements of puzzle, hard to describe it without spoiling. Well worth it.
    • Stacking - You're a Russian doll that stacks into other dolls and take their powers!

    Time sinks
    • Civilisation 5 is great but a danger to your life.
    • The Elder Scrolls Morrowind - Well worth a play through, you could always go for Morrowblivion or Skywind when released for newer graphics. You can get mods to make it look amazing, but the combat at the start of the game always sucks.

If you look around you can get some of the mentioned games cheap now. Like Steam has Trine and others on offer at the moment

And as someone mentioned XCom Enemy Unknown, you can get it for free by voting for the Golden Joystick awards

I would say Arma 2 and Arma 3. Im mostly an fps player and these two games are the games i would be playing mostly these days. Ive no interest in twitch shooters at all these days. And with BF4 being so glitchy for the longest time i gave up on it.

Arma 2 has plenty of life in it yet, loads of maps/mods to play. If you decide to get it and want to play Dayz go with the CCG(Custom Combat Gamimg) launcher. It will load all the mods for you and give you a list of servers to play on. Works very well.

Arma 3 is probably the best looking game ive played on PC,and it improves on Arma 2 in nearly every way imo. Not quite as much community content for it yet but enough to keep it feeling fresh imo. Best mods atm imo are King of the Hill,Altis Life,Wasteland,Dayz(Breaking Point with Epoch hopefully soon). King of the Hill is a great starting point, has a leveling system which lets you unlock the more advanced guns and vehicles in the game at a steady pace. Also the Steam workshop for Arma 3 is full of scenarios to download and play, great if your board to flick through, download, and have a bit of fun with.

All in all series like Arma are the reason i game on PC,these type of experiences are just not available on console right now!

Oh yeah, keep an eye on the development of UT4 or whatever it is going to be called. UT99, UT2004 and UT3 to some extent are big FPS multiplayer titles in the PC world. A lot of people still play UT99 today. Different completely to the mechanics of CSGO. Emphasis of movement and speed to avoid being hit and utilisation of projectiles weapons.

It's very low end, you won't get Arma running well with that card as mentioned, but tons of older and brilliant games will run.

Ask Santy for a 970 (and a power supply if you need it) then you'll be laughing.

Would that card be pricey? Actually will call of duty run on that card? Might even buy a used graphics card cheaper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

Also, keep in mind that some of the older games, such as CoD2 still have a fairly large following, and thus have a decent amount of servers with players on them.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

The 970's weighing in around the €310 mark. Very fair price for a brilliant card, you'll get about 3 years of things running very well out of it (and 2 more years of slowly dwindling "fanciness" in your graphics, but turning details down will make this a non-issue).

Don't play CoD on a PC, it's a console scrub's game and the people behind it don't care about where they came from anymore. Ghosts didn't even run on PC for me when it was released, I hadn't seen a game as broken at launch since Battlefield. Titanfall's a far better alternative for that feel of game and Activision + Infinity Ward should quite rightly be punished in the bank account for releasing such a fking terrible POS piece of software (I don't even know if the game was any good, but a 10 year old game engine that's had a yearly release cycle for the last 6 years can never be forgiven for being that broken).

The 970 has just been released and has hit the sweet point in the price/performance ratio. I doubt anything will give it trouble at 1080p for a very long time to come.

If you want to try second hand there are probably people offloading 770's which is still a great card and all the better if you can get a bargain. Check the usual sites too as some places might be trying to get rid of old stock, might get lucky.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Must have for an fps fan would be planetside 2,by far the best game to show off what a pc is capable of and its free,go get it now.

You can get a big upgrade to your current card certainly but not anything that would be a good idea buying right now because they just barely play the latest games at low settings usually (at 1080p).

You're better off playing older games from GOG.com or wherever (some superb games there) and saving up a bit more for a good midrange card around the 150-200 quid mark.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

You'll get a huge amount of older games that you can still play. Some of these are still considered the best games ever (Deus Ex, Half Life etc...), so that'll keep you entertained for quite a while. You'll need an upgrade to play anything more recent though, so i'd just start saving a few bob every month, and you'll have it in now time (and never look back).

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You could spend years working through the older games on Steam, GOG and elsewhere and still not get bored. If you develop a taste for Strategy games you'll have options that were released this year. :)

You might be able to land a HD7950/GTX760 on adverts for about the 130 mark with a bit of paitence/haggling, about the best you could do. Could possibly offset 15-20 quid of the cost by selling the GT620 to someone who just needs any old card at all.

Would certainly be a very decent card for gaming, not sure what an xbox one is going for but I would imagine it would be worth a decent bit more than the card, and if I was paying cash for the GTX I'd be looking to land it for a bit under the asking (Gut feeling is that something around the 220ish mark would be a fair enough price for it)

    Whats your PSU like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,498 ✭✭✭Lu Tze

While a fast card, its 3 generations old, and very power hungry, so you would need to check your PSU would be able to handle it. It is in essence 2 GPUS on the one card, so it is similar to having 2 cards running in SLI. Some games dont scale all that well with two cards so you could end up with less than steller performance in some games.

There are a couple of HD7850 graphics cards on adverts, one is a 2GB going for €90 which i think is decent for something that will run 1080p at medium to high settings.

The next step up would be the 7950s mentioned above, which would be quiute the bargain for 120-130

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 10,088 Mod ✭✭✭✭marco_polo

EoinHef had a few HD7950 for about that ballpark in the B&U forum for sale thread recently, not sure if he still has them. Typically go for a bit higher than that for sure but I think it can be done if you find someone who is happy enough to get a quick sale for a reasonably fair offer.

If were still talking games, Civ V is great if you ask me, and Postal 2 is one of the funniest games I've ever played! Could run on a calculator!

Portal and Portal 2 are excellent games, Borderlands is much better on PC than console

Surprised nobody has mentioned Mount and Blade, graphics are poor but good enough to play, and its fun to sink a few hours into roleplaying with a GoT mod or similar

Prob mentioned already, but if not, do get it.
If you like RTS games in any way/shape/form, this should be a huge treat.

The single player campaign is some serious fun, i've played it a few times, great story, great characters and voice acting. Brilliant gameplay.

Battle.net (multiplayer system) takes the game to a whole new level, with great custom made maps. The birth of Dota was in warcraft 3, along with a host of great games, like Footmen, Tower defences and the ranked ladder too.

It is hard to recommend games as everyone is a little different but for me I like these on PC.

To play while you watch Netflix/box sets:
Xcom- Turn based so you can watch TV and play quite easily.
Football Manager: it will kill your spare time but again great to watch box sets to.
Company of heroes: WWII RTS, not turn based but still as it has little in terms of story in game it can take the distractions.
Wastelands 2 Turn based RPG like Fallout 1 or 2.

    FPS:
Wolfenstein A new order: I really liked this.
BF4: PC will likely struggle until you get your card but it is a great shooter.
Medal of Honor Warfighter: The console version struggled, but the PC version is stunning, looks great plays great and is very different from everything else in the modern military shooters. It has some really cool features like the buddy system, a great cover system and the weapons feel like the real thing. It still has a small but active community of really decent players.

    Indie Games:
    FTL: Addictive little gem.
    Kerbal Space Program
    Paper Please.

Anywhere selling black ops 2 and ghosts cheap?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,994 ✭✭✭Taylor365

A few sites for picking up cheap games:

humblebundle (Bundles games together. Usually over €100 worth for less than €10)
    dlcompare (Compares cheap cdkeys)
    bundlestars

And a few main selling sites:
    gamersgate/
    greenmangaming
    gog (specialist in old school)

Keep your eyes peeled and you can pick up most things half price or cheaper on these sites.

Use your better judgement when on stupidly cheap cd-key sites though :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,708 ✭✭✭✭Skerries

the 2 main sites you will need are

Allkeyshop a cd-key comparison site which I find is better than dlcompare but use both anyway, never buy from the ones that have the Russian flag on them as you will need to use a vpn and that can get your Steam account banned

istheranydeal it's a comparison site for the regular sites

this sub Reddit is also very handy so keep an eye on it
