Holiday Entitlements

    A relative recently got a job with an English company operating in Ireland, and she remarked that she would have English holidays and not Irish holidays.
    I am not at all sure that there are any differences really, but as it was mentioned I suppose there are some differences ... Paddy's Day maybe?

    I would have thought being employed in Ireland would mean the employer having to provide the standard Irish holiday entitlements.

    Is this common?

    I know absolutely nothing about this subject as is probably obvious :)

    There are many Irish companies that require people to work on "Irish holidays". Bus and train companies come to mind. Pubs and restaurants also.

    I assume you get the time in lieu.

    Also some call centers work on irish bank holidays but, as said amdublin, they get time in lieu.

    What's mentioned in contract?

    I work in American company based here & work Irish Bank hols. Get a day in lieu & o/t pay.

    Bank hols are over-rated though.

    In Ireland you are entitled to 20 days statutory leave and 9 bank holidays. There are 8 bank holidays in the UK in a year, and some are on different days to Ireland's BH's.

    You're effectively entitled to 29 days leave a year, but you may have to work some Irish bank holidays and take off some UK ones.

    That's legal as all holiday dates must be approved/agreed by/with your employer.

    I do not have access to the terms of the contract, and based my thread question only on what I was told ...... that English holiday entitlements apply or something to that effect.

    OK, as I now understand it ..... once the total leave days are applied for Ireland (29 in place of 28 English) then it matters not what days they are, once this is agreed with the employer.

    I will make the assumption (not good but no other option) that what was said to me means that English bank holiday dates will apply to the job.

    Just leaves me wondering about the extra day ...... but as it does not directly concern me, I am not going to delve into that any further.

    But it might be something I should remember for the future. ;)

    They cannot take the exra day from you nor can you sign away this right.

    I suspect they just want to allign you to UK working times/dates.
