    Hi,
I'm trying to sell my Golf mk4, 1.4 litre petrol, she runs like a dream, just passed NCT with flying colours but it seems that only young lads are interested in looking at her mostly...they seem more interested in how she looks than how she runs!
She has 14 inch alloys but they aren't in great condition to be honest, I never gave it a second thought myself... but now I'm looking at getting some second hand ones to make it look a bit better but they are all 15 inch minimum for the golf mark 4!
Someone in a dismantlers even told me he has never come across 14 inch alloys!!
A fella on DoneDeal reckons I can put any size alloys on up to 19 inch as long as they are 5 stud (which mine are)... I'm wondering if this is true and if so is it safe or will it make any difference to the driving etc
    Thanks in advance! :)

ps I'm hoping to get a small diesel car instead so I can do some caravan holidays in the summer... any recommendations around the 2,000 mark plse?!

    15s will be no problem.
Its a bit more complex than just being 5 stud though.

    Be grand so

Unless they're seriously cheap and have 4 good tyres there mightn't be much point though.

You might need to get spacers for them

Not if they are genuine golf wheels. :)

Type 5x100 into done deal search. That's the fitment you need. These are probably the best of what's there.

15s are grand. Even a set of 16" montreal II's, the standard gti wheels would be grand. Anything above that will be a making things tough on the 1.4 imo. Your wheels need to be 5x100 stud pattern, 57.1 centre bore and et will be fine anywhere from 40 down to 30. You can go with a lower et than 30 but too much poke on small wheels at standard high would look crap!

wow thank you all for your replies!

I was wondering if having different wheel sizes actually makes any difference to driving & performance?

I mean would she be sturdier on the road in general with 15 inch wheels or harder on petrol etc?

    thanks again!

It depends on a number of things, wheel size is only one factor.
Generally a wider tyre gives a different feeling because the contact patch is shaped differently to a narrower longer patch that you would find on a narrower tyre.
Using larger and larger wheels makes a car look better but in order to get the wheel larger and still fit into a normal arch the tyre has to get smaller in diameter which means lower profile.
IME 15" tyres in 195/65-15 are pretty much the cheapest and the widest choice available.
