Deraileurs have no speeds, only shifters and cogs have (And some chains)

In that case are 10 speed shifters compatible with the cogs of an 11 speed chainring?

Chain rings are on the front and cogs are part of the cassette on the rear. Front deraileurs come as doubles and triples because there are 2 or 3 chainrings on the front. Rear deraileurs can come in anything from 5 to 11 speeds matching the number of cogs on the rear cassette. Forgive me if I am pointing out the obvious.

Ideally you should match the rear deraileur with the cassette and in turn (more importantly ) with the shifter. I guess it possible to have a 10 speed shifter, 10 speed rear dérailleur and 11 speed cassette. Never tried it so not sure how smooth the shifting would be.

Bare in mind also that chains come in different widths to match the number (and therefore width) of cogs on the cassette.

Not even going to ask your current versus desired set up........ It's a Friday.

Now I think of it that is a really stupid question. :)

Yes I'm aware of the locations of all the elements having built a few bikes but I'm a little ignorant when it comes to mixing and matching components. I just thought that an Ultgra 6800 chainring is to be used with an 11 speed group set? The way I should have phrased it is will a 11 speed chainset work with components which are all designed specifically for 10 speed. I always thought you could refer to the chainring teeth as cogs. Guess I was wrong. :)

Hey Mr. Prenderville, despite the seemingly knowledgeable tone of my post I am no expert, happy to be corrected. I'm guessing that you have a 10 speed groupset and want to put an 11 speed cassette on the rear?

Don't mind being corrected. No I'm running a 10 speed groupo and see a powermeter on an 11 speed chainset at a good price. Judst want to make sure it would be compatible with my components.

I have an 11 speed ultegra chainset and 10 speed Tiagra mechs and shifters, everything works fine

It will work perfectly in the shimano setup...
Shimano use the hub with at the rear to dictate spacing for 11 cogs( hence the whole incompatibility of wheels pre 11 speed)
The chain in a shimano 11 speed set up is the same as a 10 speed setup

Campag use a narrower chain- which led to narrower gap between chainrings..
A 10 speed setup WILL work in campy too.. But not as smooth as it should be..

Thought I'd read the Shimano chains were narrower as well.

Yeah that chain set will run perfectly with your 10 speed group as would any double. Best of luck.
