Hi lads I wonder can I have some knowledgeable opinions on the following car - in case the link didn't appear it's a 2012 2.0 diesel with 18000 miles on it, black in colour, some extras advertised at 19000€.

    www.cbg.ie/alfa-romeo-giulietta-2.0-2012-dublin

What is the general opinion of this type of car? I'm currently driving a 08 golf tsi 140 1.4 petrol. The alpha is an English import not sure why. Also has anyone dealt with the garage tractamotors - I think I've heard of them but know nothing about them and there's very little in the way of reviews about them (good or bad)

    Many thanks guys

No experience of the car I'm afraid. the dealer has been around for years and years anyway.
Maybe have a look on parkers.co.uk and honestjohn.co.uk for some reviews of the car.

That's a variant of the same Fiat engine found in numerous Opels too, it's really an updated version of the older 1.9 Multi-Jet engine. It's a bit course by today's standards but is nippy enough. My neighbour has a petrol Giulietta and has had no issues with it. If you are not going a lot of mileage then a 1.4 T-Jet Giulietta is worth considering, similar power to your TSi Golf.

I think Tractamotors are or were main Alfa Romeo dealers at one stage. Just looking on carzone there and this one is cheaper:

No experience of either garage though.

I saw the one you linked to and had a quick Google of deerpark. Seems to have a poor rep so on that basis I'd skip them. I wouldn't be a high mileage driver at all maybe 15km per year but it's very hard to get a 2012 of the higher horsepower 1.4 petrol

    Thanks

If I was buying the UK import through tractamotors is there anything specific I should look out for. I believe there a reputable garage but can never be too careful. I've asked for the UK reg so I might get a cartell run on it or is this a waste of time and money?

The warranty that comes with the car is mapfre - is this usual?

I hate those third party warranties with a passion. To me it's too easy for the dealer you bought it off to avoid hassle of having to deal with you in the event of a problem. They will just wash their hands and fob you off to the warranty company. I see these type warranties more as protecting the dealer rather than the customer.

Have to somewhat agree with this comment. I had a new 2009 Alfa 159 150bhp Diesel. Clocked up over 100K Km in 18th Months - The car was fantastic and the best car i have ever owned. I had one small warranty issue which was the steering column (known issue). It was a battle dealing with warranty provider and dealer - Both passing the buck - Close to the end of warranty when identified (95K Km).I ended up going directly to the Irish distributor, Fiat Ireland and got the issue resolved.

There was also another small issue (which I can't remember what it was) but I was sent to this fairly manky back street mechanic in Swords. Very surprised that it wasn't a main dealer or at the least a fiat dealership.

I test drove the model you are looking at in 2011. I thought they were a really nice car. Little understated inside but some prefer that. Coming from a Golf Tsi - you'll find it a lighter car to drive, much nicer seats in the alpha...

What's to say that this "manky" mechanic was any less qualified or less equipped to deal with the issue though?

I agree, my description is probably wrong. The service was good and they were knowlegeable... But no car available at time of drop off, getting in and out of the place was a nightmare and it was a puddle filled yard - just wasn't ideal.

    Sorry OP for off topic...

the add is confusing. It's a 2.0 Diesel. I emailed the garage earlier re warranty he said that they have no warranty that will cover me in Cork apart from Mapfre, however I am covered with the dealee for 12 months with a comprehensive warranty which covers the vehicle with the exception of wear and tear items. So I suppose it's a double warranty - only thing would be getting the car to Dublin if it wasn't drivable and mapfre wouldn't cover it but I guess it can always go on a low loader. Does this sind reasonable folks? I'm not sure is the mapfre thing because I'm in Cork the garage is in Dublin or the fact that the car is a UK import or both

I bought a 2nd hand car from tractamotors and was impressed with their after sales service. I know quite a few other people who have also had good experiences. The warranty I got was with them and they used the mapfire as a recovery service to get the car back to them.

So anyway I'm thinking about having a look at this car in the next few days. As its a UK import id like to know what checks should i get done if i decide to go ahead. I'm thinking an AA onsite inspection and a cartell check. Or would a good mechanic be better than the AA check? I think they will offer a warranty with themselves if i want it but if the car breaks down down the country i might have to get it back to them myself but this might still give more assurance than a mapfre?

Interesting. Thanks for that. Was it the 2 litre diesel you test drove and what kind of year was it can you remember? What if anything did you change to?

Honest John is great but wont tell you about the dealer network, availability of spare, resale value in Ireland etc.
