    Presumably head gasket failure?

Try www.partfinder.ie or Traynors in the north. You would want to be very sure of the engine though...

Have you got a few quotes for a repair? Important to use the latest kit with all the bits.

Make sure you get one that's got the head gasket done or you'll be back to square one. As they all go on that engine. It was a common failure I think once there done once though there ok.

They do give head trouble but if your going to switch engines I would recommend doing the head on the new engine as it will be a lot less hassle to do sitting on the ground rather than bending over the rear

If it is HGF, why not just advise repairing the existing engine?

It's a difficult change in the MGF. Engine, subframe and suspension have to be dropped out. Make sure whoever is doing it torques the engine mount bolts back correctly or you'll spin lopsided around a corner when the come undone as I did

Can a HGF be repaired in situ in the MGF?

Yep it sure can. Expect skinned knuckles.

It's not easy due to space restrictions. Make sure you replace the inlet manifold gasket, coolant pipes under the car all the way to the rad and thoroughly flush the large coolant system or it'll fail again. They can be sorted but you need it done right to avoid a repeat "all Rovers are Shyte" HGF report from your mechanic.

Ballpark price for a proper job - what you said, plus MLS head gasket, oil rail, bolts, all other gaskets etc?

    That's something I don't know.
