Topping drives, any ideas.

I've been away from the game for a few years, and now I'm back, the best part of my game used to be my driving, now I can't get the ball off the tee. I'm either topping completely or hitting a worm burner that goes 40 yards. I sometimes leave a mark just after the tee. I'm hitting my irons really well and each hole is a knocked drive and then a 4 iron recovery.

    Help.

Makes sense, sounds like you're hitting down, which is good for irons but bad for driver, you need to hit the ball just on start of the upswing with the driver.

Where is the ball teed for your driver? conventionally it would be just inside left foot which should help catch it on the upswing.

(Usual warning accompanies advice coming from hacker)

Could be breaking your wrists along with ball position.

You know your struggling then it gets inside your head, loosen your grip and relax, big smooth turn back and threw the ball. Try getting it airborne first.

Going to a pro and nipping problems in the bud straight away after a lay-off is the best advice I can give.

If you're topping the ball you could be trying to swing too hard. You see it so often when people have drivers in their hands.

They try to absolutely murder the ball, are up too quick & the ball scutters along the ground a few yards in front of them.

Just try taking a fraction off your swing & you should get a more consistent strike

I've been having the same issue on occasion. For me, I've been lifting my head to catch a look at my beautiful shots, only for it to be topped about 4 yards.

Make sure you've got your weight roughly 50/50 across both legs with your driver. Sounds like you may have more on the front leg, causing you to hit down (as another poster said above). Good for irons, bad for driver.

It's not possible to give advice on the swing without seeing it. The only advice that will work for you is to have an instructor look at your swing.

All other advice, while well intentioned, is essentially useless. Any of the tips could work or mightn't work, meaning you're wasting your time trying them all and filling your head with potentially unnecessary advice. See an instructor it will accelerate your improvement.

For example somebody has suggested you're lifting your head, I've lifted my head on practically every swing I've ever taken and top the ball maybe twice in the year.

Concentrate on hitting the back of the ball, not the centre.Put the logo of on the ball facing back off the tee peg and focus on this logo.Tee the ball high and hit out through it.
