A friend intends going to Australia early next month and her passport expires 11th april next. She is in Glasgow, irish citizen, and was under impression she could get a renewal within 10 days via a Post Office in Glasgow. When she called there was told it could take 3 weeks. I gather one can enter Australia as long as one is holding a current passport but could she encounter problems with the airline on point of departure? Any advice would be appreciated. I assume passports aare only inspected by airline people when departing and state people on arrival?

Why would there be a problem? Is it that she intends to stay for longer than her passport is valid for? Is it that she's worried in case the Australians require that the passport be valid for six months?

    What exactly are you asking?

Travel info (for trips less than 3 months duration) .....

If you plan to visit Australia for 3 months and you hold a passport from the European Union, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland or Vatican City you do not need to contact us or make an application for a visa at an Australian Embassy. All passport holders of these countries can apply online, free of charge for a 3 month visitor visa. This visa is called an eVisitor. If you hold one of these passports this is the simplest way to get a visa for your holiday.

She is afraid that the expire date could create problems..staying there for 3 weeks. While she knows that Australia only requires a current passport she is concerned the airline, Emirates I think, might have a different requirement. Thanks for your very prompt response band bear with me as I have not left Ireland for many Years!!

There has been accounts on other threads of over-zealous airline officials attempting to turn people back because of imaginary passport requirements. In all cases the situation was resolved when the traveller asked to speak to a supervisor, these are typically employees with more experience who understand that not every country requires you to have six months remaining on your passport.

On the page where you apply for an eVisitor permit, it says the following .....

Important: We recommend that clients hold a passport valid for at least six months.

The word 'recommend' is in italics (in case you're reading this on a mobile device) which suggests that it's not mandatory but presumably they are aware that some airlines unilaterally enforce the rule, even though the Australian authorities don't insist on it. However I can't imagine that Emirates is turning people back for a rule that doesn't exist, they have to be aware of the requirements if they're flying thousands of people into Oz every day of the week.
