    Hello

I Live in an apartment block and have no access to a running tap in a suitable location. im not washing my bike in the bath etc

Does anybody know of a garage etc in Dublin that you could wash your bike ?

Or even a public place that has a tap and a hose ?

A bucket of water on the balcony/car park??

Thanks. balcony is way too small. car park not really suitable.

Wonder would a garage frown upon this, with the new obsession over water charges etc.

One of those self service car wash facilities with a power washer hand held if probably your best bet

Don't know where you live but there is one in the garage just between donnybrook village and the bus garage

Commercial business don't pay water charges specifically. It is included in their rates which they have already being paying.

The car park in my apt block is small - about 8 spaces. I wait until there's one free by the wall and bring down a mop bucket along with a bike stand.

Before I had the bike stand I just propped it up against the wall.

I'd be careful of garage power washers tbh.

I live in Dublin 4 so that would suit.

thing is I have no bike stand either which makes it more awkward.

Thanks. I'm aware of being careful with the power washer and bearings etc. suppose I could just stand well back from the bike with the power washer to reduce the water pressure.

Before you had bike stand, how did you manage with degreasing chain, lubricating chain etc. ........... where you kinda need to have bike and wheels off the ground and pedal it backwards whilst doing work with chain etc.

Not really. Use a paint brush with degreaser on the chain and cassette. Rotate the crank with the back wheel off the ground a few times, leave for a few mins and wash off with water. Then lube the cassette and chain, lift the rear wheel off the ground again and rotate a few times.

The stand does make it more convenient but its not essential.

i dunno. petrol stations have a very plentiful supply of degreaser; expect to pay about €1.50 a litre for it, but be warned it's quite flammable.

Maybe I could just wash the bike with the fuel pump alone :)

If the process for cleaning your bike isn't as simple as possible it might stay dirty for too long, making it a messier job when you do get around to it. You also increase the chances of mechanical problems with gear cables and the drivechain. From November to March once a week should be enough.

How much are the wash credits in the garage ? Probably not less than you would expect to pay for a car. Factor in feeling like a gimp with all your bits and bobs and there's a good chance it'll be put on the long finger.

I dont know the price of the wash credits, but relatively cheap I would say. I better be careful with the power hose though !

    6-7 euro usually

Just another thought the mountain bike lads have bike wash facilities up near ballisnstoe, near where they built the trails.

I am nearly sure I saw a sign on the road just outside the car park

I usally wash my bike while watchin tv in sitting room, I turn my bike upside down to wash and degrease, I usally put a big beach towel underneath get a pan of water and 2 cloths first one to get the dirt off and second one is a microfiber cloth which I use to dry bike off once its washed, it brings out a shine. To degrease cassette and chain I have a spry tin off dirtwash, I spray it in to a cloth and catch the chain with the cloth and turn pedals until chain comes up clean, would have to spray the cloth a good few times, to clean the links I fill an egg cup with spray and use a tooth brush to rub each link, I also use tooth brush on cassette. Hope this helps :-)

Jaysus you lads are obsessed with cleaning your bikes. Do ever get any time to cycle them?

Baby wipes. That's all you need!

All I've ever needed is a bucket of water, don't see the need for a hose, never mind a power hose.

Bucket of warm water, a power house would only remove stickers and paint. You will have to oil your chain and mechanical parts after.

i wash my bike very occasionally.
i just tear rags into strips, light spray with wd40 and 'floss' the bike for the most part.
