10days to produce drivers licence!!

Ok so last night I got stopped by a very rude garda on my way home from work, my headlight bulb had gone and I hadn't realised.
Was told I was getting a fine in the post and as I didn't have my licence on me I had 10days to produce it at a designated garda station.
Now here is where there is a problem, I thought my licence was in my other bag but I've searched everywhere and no joy. I now need to get a replacement licence, which I can't do until Monday (already 6 days gone) then it takes another 8 working days to receive the replacement. Needless to say I cannot produce it within 10 days.
What will happen if I don't produce it? Is there any way to get an extension on the 10days?

If you need to produce your licence within ten days then you should make it a matter of urgency to go to a licence centre to obtain a new licence as soon as possible. In the meantime, it may be a good idea to make contact with the relevant garda and make them aware that you are getting a replacement licence. You will need to get form D401 or D201 stamped and signed by a Garda to state that you lost; maybe you can do these two jobs at the same time.

Also, you could ask the NDLS for a Driving Statement; contact them at 0761087880 and they can help you with this. It may suffice the gard; ask them if it will do.

You know that you are required to have your licence with you at all times.
I usually have mine in a flap on the visor.

I'm guessing you are a lady (if not apologies) and if you have a number of different handbags (as does Mrs CML) then it's awkward having to transfer the licence each time you change.

Yes indeed. I usually keep it in my work bag but pretty sure I lost it at an event over the weekend.

Have contacted the garda been told produce it as soon as I get it back but I will need to attend court as it will be late.
Hopefully will be struck off, fingers crossed.

Any Garda who questions a female about something she has done wrong is automatically rude! Good thing you were able to see him in time with only one light.

Anything useful to add or are you just trolling?

Get the form and make an appointment with the driving lience centre asap. Report the lience as lost. Bring a copy of your appointment details and the lost lience report to the Garda station and see would they extend the amount of time they will allow you to produce it.

You are licensed to drive. You just don't have the card to show as evidence. Report as lost, apply for a new one, bring all paperwork with you when you eat humble pie at the garda station.

Certainly not trolling, just an amused comment based on many years experience. No offense meant to anybody.

I agree with the above. You said you contacted the station. Often in things like this face to face gets a better result. Whatever you do, do not make any comment about the you thinking the Garda was rude.

I also recommend this. Keep records of all calls to and contacts with the Garda about this issue. Make copies of the replacement licence document.

In the event of this going to court you will be able to produce proof that you have made every effort to obtain and produce a replacement licence.

I found myself in this situation some years ago, a garda stamped the replacement licence form and requested that I produce the licence when it was issued. Took five weeks for it to come, possibly they're issued in a more timely fashion nowadays.

You should also note that even though the NDLS quote 8 days for a licence replacement, In my recent experience it can take significantly longer.

Simple solution to this is to make contact with the Garda in question explain the circumstances of your scenario. Notify him that you have lost your original licence and show your documentary evidence that states you have applied for the new licence.

If you cant speak to him face to face get an email address and scan your licence application / receipt etc. stating that you are making every effort to adhere to the 10 day rule.

If he has any common sense he will wait until you produce the actual newly issued licence before applying for a summons on the garda system. The 10 day lawful demand is flexible and has to be applied with a degree of fairness and understanding.
