The threshold at which people will begin to pay the tax has gone up from just over €10,000 to just over €12,000. This will remove 80,000 workers from the charge

can someone explain the USC change to me? is all income below 12000 excluded?
what income is the new 1.5% rate applied to

    thanks !

you get charged no usc if you earn less that €12036 (think thats the cut off) but if you earn one cent above this you pay 1.5% on every euro.

Yeah cos the concept of paying tax to so many is alien to them, even a measly 2%!!!

For the average worker the total percentage of tax has been reduced from 52% to 51 %
    • Tax 40 %
    • PRSI 4%
    • USC 7%

The 80,000 workers mentioned must be figures from statistics that show annual casual workers that earn between 10,036 - 12,000 per annum .

I think everyone should pay income tax. Including those on minimum wage, and on the dole - increase them by 2% if needs be. If you don't pay tax, you have a vested interest in trying to increase the amount of taxes that everyone else pays, so that you can benefit more.

We'd have a better, more efficient government if people were annoyed at how their taxes were spent - you just have to see the outrage about everyone paying for water. In the past, no-one cared how much water was costing us to supply, now everyone seems to want a cheaper service with fewer super-expensive employees.

Agree with Hmmm above... look at those who are being aggressive on the water rates issue, why so, because they can't handle the fact they they might have to pay some form of tax. Ah bless.

Try been a PAYE worker then. FFS, every budget we are hit straight off the bat. Don't let this USC dropping a 1% or 2 con you. I barely reach the limit but I get hit, any lower and I might aswell not work.
