What a Fcuked Up Country we live in!!!.

Bought a Classic car on the 1st of October . Got the new Cert today 15th. Went into local Tax office to declare it "Off the road" as the car is in pieces and going to be rebuilt over the coming months. The Road Tax expired on 30 Sept , so they refuse to accept my Declaration as its outside the 10 day period. Now they want me to pay a full years Tax to declare it off the road!!!!. They have as much chance of getting struck by lightning down a coalmine as getting money from me on this one. !!!!

Having spoken to one of the mandarins in Limerick, he said I should have done so BEFORE I got the Reg Documents into my possession. I always thought that the vehicle was not registered to you UNTIL you got the Documents back from them. On the RF150 they require the "Vehicle Registration Certificate Number" which you cant give until you get the Reg Cert back. Typical Fcuk up by those in charge of this Fcuked up Country!!!

SORN was like that in the UK when it was first introduced. It was always hard work when getting another vehicle without tax. A sale/transfer cancelled any current SORN. You couldn't SORN it unless it was in your name. The DVLA were rubbish at doing a keeper change and a SORN declaration in the same envelope at the same time. I think the window of opportunity was nearer the month, rather than 10 days though.

It's a lousy system anyway made worse by Irish government implementation.

As soon as you buy a car, after 4-5 days check

    by putting in your reg.

It will say "No changes recorded in the last month" and then it will say "Transferred to individual on"

As soon as it says the latter you need to go into the tax office and declare it off the road. It can be in your name a couple of days before you get the book. It's a very very unfair system and there are a lot of people getting caught out by this.

OP I'm afraid your only option is to tax it for the year (Presuming it's vintage) and then at the end of the year BEFORE it expires, declare it off. That, or just don't do anything and if and when you decide to put the car back on the road, pay the back tax and forward tax.

If you decide not to tax it, and in two years decide that you aren't actually going to finish it, and decide to sell it, you won't have to tax it at all and the new owner will only be responsible for taxing it from the day they bought it.

The off road declaration form still asks for the registration cert number, how do you get that before you have the cert? I got caught like this too. thing to do when it's finished is to sell it to a mate for free and buy it back 2 weeks later.

I think when buying a car, the trick is to fill in the date of sale as a later date. That gives you a slightly longer window to get to the tax office.
