Hell of alot of spin in the information
A PUBLIC CONSULTATION has been launched today that could see more vintage cars back on the roads.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is consulting interested parties, including owners, clubs and associations, over the testing of the roadworthiness of vintage vehicles.
The consultation specifically will be looking at the way that pre-1980 vehicles are examined. The proposal is that vehicles are to be reviewed against the standards to which they were originally built.
This review of the legislation is in accordance with Action 59 of the government’s 2013-2020 Road Safety Strategy to determine the benefits of amending the roadworthiness requirements for vehicles in Ireland

And this is meant to do what they say - Put more vintage vehicles back on the road. Lol!

Doesn't look like a money grab to me. The proposal would allow vintage owners to have their cars NCTed if they choose to do so, but not be subject to the same quality standards as modern cars.

Vintage owners who want to NCT their vehicles at present are permitted to do so, but may not do so because it's not possible or prohibitively expensive to get it up to the modern standard. But if the standard is reduced, they will.

Looking at old threads on boards, this appears to be something that vintage car owners and clubs actually want to be able to do, presumably because rickety old bangers reflect poorly on vintage clubs, and it probably has insurance implications too.

I passionatly despise the RSA and everything about them and there ethos. But I actually think this sounds like a decent idea in theory.

I personally agree with it,look at it this way if you are looking to buy a classic wouldn't it be good knowing it was road worthy?someone who buys a classic if you were selling a classic wouldn't itadd to the price and help it stand out.

A lot of classic owners are mechanically minded and enjoy working in them and could spot worn parts but on the other side there is someone who buys one and drives it with no clue if it is faulty(you are legally responsible for the vehicle been road worthy)

Driving a nice modern quiet car is miles from driving a classic and many could be fooled by "its old and probably just like that

With current motor tax of €1809 a year for large engined cars there will be none of them left to ever become classic cars in this country.

Someone has to suffer so a new 520d can be taxed cheap

Nothing to worry about if the classic cars are structurally sound with suspension, brakes & steering etc in good working order.

Notesting for old cars is a joke, there was similar scaremongering when the NCT came about.

How? It ensures that brakes, suspension etc are in order and that the cars are safe to be on the road on the day of the test. It'll ensure rust buckets that currently can be drove on the road because they're pre 1980 won't be.
Surely those who own pre 1980s cars want there cars to be in the best condition possible, taking pride in what they have.
Well any that I know do!

    How exactly?

The extra cost of the test is hardly that punitive, if the cars in question are not of a high enough standard to pass then they should not be on the road anyway.
If the owners of these classic cars are not maintaining them to a roadworthy standard without being forced to then the cars in question are not going to last anyway and if they are being run into the ground then it's no real loss.

So in short if mandatory testing of classic vehicles to age related standards is brought in any death traps will be removed, standards of the remaining vehicles will generally increase. Surely that is better for the classic scene?

I see no downside, please enlighten me?
