HI I am hoping I can get some advice here, I was recently offered a part time job for the Christmas period and I am currently claiming jobseekers allowance. The thing is the contract is only ten hours and its spread out over five days which means I cannot claim for the days I am not working which would be fine if It was just me on my own but I have two dependents. I really do not want to turn down the opportunity of work but I don't see any other choice. I barely scrape by now paying bills, rent, etc. I would like to know if there is anyway I could work the ten hours and retain at least some of my jobseekers allowance, I have asked the employer but pretty much its five days or nothing. I would ask for genuine answers and not rants about me turning down work because I am better of on the dole because this seems to be a rare case when I may be better off on the dole sadly. Any help will be greatly appreciated I want to apologise for my terrible punctuation in advance.
    Thank you

    I don't think so.

You could go to Welfare and ask them, but I've not heard of any exemptions from the policy.

The only hope would be that the contracted hours are two per day, but they'll actually give you a lot more. That's a big risk to take, though, and they employer could change their mind at any time, and you'd have difficulty arranging childcare.

30 hrs per week MAX, but 3 days ( or part thereof MAX ). Its a silly system as Person A working 3 x 10 shifts is still OK for casual claim whereas you doing 5 x 2hrs are not. But it is the way it is and no exceptions as far as I know.

Look up Citizens advice or ask SW. There is something I read about and it's called Part-time job incentive scheme. You have to have been unemployed for 15 months, the proposed job has to last 2 months or longer and working hours have to be less than 24.

It's a silly system when SW make it difficult for people to take up work, especially those with dependents. You have to do what is best for you at the end of the day.

    Good luck.

Hi guys, I have been busy so this is my reply to you all.
I have looked up the part time work incentive unfortunately I have only been claiming J.A since march even though I have been unemployed since last October, My own fault I know. I find it unfair that although I would be working five days a week it would only be two hours so I would be able to search for full time employment but it is what it is when you have no qualifications. I would like to take the job which would fill a gap in my c.v but by the looks of it I will have to turn down the offer. Thanks for the advice I have received so far though much appreciated.

Hi guys just an update, I wrote to the company which was Argos am I allowed to tell people that here ?. Anyway I asked could they maybe make it a three day week instead of five but unfortunately they cannot. So I am back to square one I am starting a job club with Fas/Intreo next week but its little substitute for real hands on work.
