I really do despair at Dara's proposal to become Irelands UKIP:
Mayo TD Dara Calleary, who was director of elections for the Roscommon South-Leitrim byelection, said a more sceptical approach to Europe and policies and regulations from the European Union should be adopted.
He said people were feeling disenfranchised from politics and the issues were the same “in Ballaghaderreen or Ballymount”. He cited turf-cutting and water charges as two issues that featured strongly in the byelection and claimed they were ideas initiated in Europe.

So a two policies with significant environmental benefits were only brought in because of Europe? Not because they made sense? Not because FF once bought an election eliminating the predecessor to water charges (rates). FF now claiming they had nothing to do with the setting up of Irish Water?

Ultimately it just goes to illustrate the point that the people now voting for Sinn Fein are primarily ex Fianna Fail voters (and some Labour). They are voting for SF because they can play the populist card given they have never been in power. As SF get closer to power they are being less specific about populist measures (they are themselves now paying water charges and accepting property tax). FF are now simply going to play the populist card back. And you know what, you will see the same type of voter drift back to FF as Sinn Fein start getting realistic about funding the country and FF can tell bigger and bigger porkies about what they will do in power. And the cycle continues.

As an aside, why are there not conspiracy threads about the fact that a machinery contractor won the Roscommon South-Leitrim by-election. It's OK to get elected on turf cutting because you make a decent profit on machinery leasing that could well be used for turf cutting but it's an absolute scandal that Denis O'Brien part owns and investment vehicle that owns one of the contractors who got the contract to install water meters for Irish Water?

I will be giving a Green candidate No.1 in the next election because of the stupid posturing by so many on turf-cutting and water charges. I don't agree with all of the Green policies but they are right on these. It will only be a symbolic vote as they have little chance of a seat but it will ease my conscience and my annoyance at the idiots out there.
