Surround for Insert stove

We have a Stovax insert stove.

We have a problem with cracking plaster just above the stove. We installed it with the usual 2 inch trim but without a marble back so the plaster is visible up to the floating mantel.

We don't like marble or slate and would like to keep as much showing plaster as possible between fire and mantel.
Is there a solution for the cracking plaster?
We are thinking of a metal surround for the fire, maybe 5 inches in diameter but will the cracking plaster eventually appear outside this down the road?

    Any other ideas besides marble?

Has anyone seen an extra wide Metal frame around the stove?

They can be made but I'd like to know the behaviour of the metal on the plaster at the back?

The extra wide metal trim will have to be about 6 inches wide.
    Any help appreciated.
