Question re moisture content and idle damper setting

    Two quick questions:
    1. I split some timber in February this year. They split logs have been in a pile in the garage since then. I checked the moisture content with a digital moisture meter and it reads 14% pretty consistently between different pieces. There's some unsplit rings and their moisture content is 15-16% I thought I'd have to wait another season before I could use the timber, and it still feels a little heavy to me. The moisture meter bought is this http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0036PSX0K/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item
I chucked one log on last night to see how it would burn. No smoke, a little slow to flame up (though I'm used to burning the scraps from our new build), but it eventually burned for an extended period of time with no big lumps left.
So just wondering am I ok with the moisture meter, or can they be trusted?

Second question is around the damper. When the stove is not in use, should I close it right down? We've got an pretty air-tight house and the stove has an external air supply, but I'm pretty sure we should be keeping the chimney ventilated, and if so should I open the damper partially or all the way?
