Use of Skybox After Cancellation

    Hi All,
Had a quick scan but dont see this question answered, apologies if it has just point me in the right direction.

Cancelled my sky subscription recently after replacing it with an Openbox. I had multiroom and was thinking I could use the skybox upstairs for some of the basic channels however I can't get past the sky viewing card message now that it has cancelled.

Is this standard or is there a way around it?

    Cheers

It was installed by Sky in Sept 2013, says it's manufactured by Dolby?

The reference to Dolby only means that it supports Dolby audio formats, it's nothing to do with the maker of the box. It probably says this on the front of the box. As swoofer said, look underneath the box for some evidence of a name. For example, mine says that is a Samsung.

thats new, to get the uk epg on a box like that you need to put a uk free to view(FTV) card card into it. So if you know anyone with a uk card that would help. The problem is if you get the uk epg and then power down the box with no card in it, the epg will revert back to Irish!! these cards are on fleabay as well. Or you could sell the box as its one year old its yours. You could try changing box to single feed, switching off at wall put in card upside down and see if it reverts but as its so new I am fairly sure sky have knobbled them. what is your location, roughly?

    Thanks Both

HighDef, i'll give it another once over later but i'm pretty sure the only names on it were 'Made by Sky' and manufactured by Dolby. Its the small box they give with the main box for multi room...............i'll check the main one too.

Swoofer, thanks for the tips ill try that. I'm in D15

I don't see where the OP says they want the UK EPG: only that they can't get past the 'viewing card message'.

OP, where exactly is this 'viewing card message' encountered? The Irish channels (RTE, TV3, TG4) are subscription on Sky. BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 stuff is free-to-air (though not all ITV, C4, C5 HD channels). You will have to add Channel 4, E4, & More4 to 'other channels', as the versions on the Irish Sky EPG are also subscription-only.

It sounds like you have a box made by Amstrad owned now by sky, remove the viewing card and unplug the box from the wall. Return the power leaving the card out, when the box boots if RTE1 is on 101 then you will need an ftv card as already pointed out earlier.

If bbc1 appears on 101 then your set to go.

Why would you 'need an FTV card'? Just for the convenience of the UK EPG? (Which the OP won't have had on the Sky box up to this point, so won't miss.)

I didn't notice anyone asking the OP where they'd encountered the message or what they meant by 'basic channels'. For all we know they just tried RTE, TV3, TG4 & weren't aware these are covered by the subscription.

As on a hd box most of the fta channels are blocked out so aint much use without a ftv card in it.

Most of the free-to-air channels? And what about 'other channels'?

I know it's not a big deal to get a card, but couldn't the OP make up their own mind rather than being told they absolutely need one?

Im sure they could goto the bother of adding all the fta channels such as ch4 locked out but seeing as most people complain about having to enter other channels for the few they need to with an active sub....for the sake of €12-20euro its much easier to buy a ftv card and have all the channels available to them on a guide with a full epg....instead of having to keep going back and forth through menus....which would be a rite pain in my opinion but it up to the user as you said.
