Bow Tie

I've my Dad's retirement night on Saturday night and I went to get a tie the other day for it but the guy in the shop suggested that I could try a bow tie for a change. I was just wondering what do people think about this. I'm in my early 20's and I wouldn't mind trying it but I'm just unsure whether it would be suitable enough. Any advice appreciated and thanks in advance.
