Out of work due to surgery

Hello, a family member is going for back surgery and it is quite serious. He is on an emergency waiting list and will be called in with less than 24 hours notice.

He recently got a job but only a contract through an agency, unfortunately not only that the surgery is necessary but also that he interviewed for a FT position and they were to announce who got it next week but he has to notify them that he is out very soon. He has about 6 to 8 months worked, and then was on Jobsbridge before this for 6 months.

He is unsure what to do while in recovery as he has been told he will not be able to work for 8 weeks (6 minimum), he has about 10days holidays but after that he won't be employed. They may give him a job when he is out but he is on hourly pay at the minute.

The welfare office have told him that he will to qualify for disability or illness benefit as he has not enough stamps collected. Technically he cannot qualify for Jobseekers as he won't be able to walk to the office for the first 2 weeks after the surgery let alone be in a position to interview for jobs.

Are their any state benefits that he is entitled too? His landlady, while very cheap rent (lucky git), has no want to entertain Rent allowance and both himself and myself are very naive to what he can do to support himself until he is back on his feet. He does not want to give up his place as he won't get such good rent deals again, he has considered sub letting as a last resort.

The best thing to do is speak to the CWO I was denied illness benefit 2 years ago and not enough stamps so I took the letter with that information to them and was given supplementary allowance while off.
