NCT - Pass without Rear Wiper?

I have a 2004 Audi A3 and the wiper motor decided to throw in the towel a few days ago. The car is due for NCT soon but is it necessary to have a functioning back wiper? I've found it hard to find a clear answer to this question.

Section 9 of the manual says testing is only on the front windscreen

If the wiper is on it then yes it has to be operating but if it's not there at all meaning wiper and arm then it's not a fail because it's not there.
My father had same issue with his fiat ages ago and just took the wiper and arm off and put take over the whole and she passed

You are correct but FYI there is a new manual dated July 2014.....

    http://www.nct.ie/pdf/NCT%20Manual%20July%202014.pdf

The new manual also states that the S.9 WINDSCREEN WIPERS AND WASHERS test 'only applies to front windscreens'

Take off the the rear arm.
Why ??? The rear wiper isn't even a part of the test so what's the point?

They'll test if if it's there.

It's not a paid re peat anyway, but they'll fail it if it's there and doesn't work.

Hard to judge it sometimes. In my experience Some lads in NCT couldn't car from a go kart.
I've sent cars in there that should've failed that passed.

I've seen loads with the rear wiper taken off for that purpose, and never put back on. Don't know how people manage without a rear wiper on a hatch, I know I can't!

How can they? It's not even test item so there are no grounds for failure. As already pointed out the manual states
    2. This test only applies to front windscreens.
