I've bought the same item twice now from china, same supplier.

First one came straight to my address,

Second one is in customs. I received the letter asking for proof, sent all the docs,

Left me thinking why the first one wasn't pulled?

Customs do not pull every parcel. They wouldnt have the manpower to do that.

How much was the value added in the customs stickers? Maybe the 1st order was under the valued. I think lately they stop most parcel over the 30-40 mark.

First parcel was marked 48$ from seller, nothing from customs.

I think this parcel this time is marked $30

Live a learn. First time ever having something in customs..

    Don't buy much outside Europe

Trick is to assume you'll be pulled by customs

And if you're not, then you've a nice little bonus

There are two things, customs duty and VAT.

Customs duty is liable on anything over €150.

Vat is liable on anything over €22.

In both cases there are far too many packages to catch everything. So you'll get lots of stuff through without being caught out. I find EMS from China never gets stopped. I also get lots of gear in from Japan on ebay and it never gets stopped.

Things like DHL and Fedex always get charged as the couriers go about their way to deal with customs in the correct manner. So try to avoid them if you can.

I got a letter today from customs asking for proof of payment for an item from outside the EU.

The item was under €22 including postage though.

Will I still have to pay a post office handling fee even though it was under the limit does anybody know?

    It's random.

And in November and December I think you're less likely to get away with it.

I never heard of anybody getting a fee if under. The actual limit is just over €26 on items which are 23% VAT. This is because they officially do not collect anything below €6 in VAT.
