I had this dilemma myself and in the end I decided to go with Applecare +. I have never insured a phone before but decided now was the time to get something at least. I have never lost a phone before so bearing that in mind I chose the Applecare option. I just have a bit more confidence dealing with Apple directly rather than insurance companies.

I went with insurance with Vodafone. Tenner a month. Lost a phone there in feb and made a claim. Replacement phone within a few days of the claim being received. Could have put it on the home insurance as an unspecified item for cheaper but had a good experience with the network.
