Best road wheelset options for about €150-170?

    Hi Chaps,

I was hit by a car on Saturday so I'm in need of a new front and rear wheel. My bike's a 2011 KTM Strada 1000 with Tiagra f/r hubs and Mavic GP22 rims. I'm looking to replace them with 105 hubs or something comparable. I've seen a few sites offering wheelsets with 105 hubs and Mach 1/Fulcrum 7/Mavic rims for €150-170. Is this good value for money or would I do well to look at other wheelsets?

I've got a Tiagra triple groupset with a 105 derailleur.

    I'm open to all advice!

    Cheers.

Should be able to pick up a set of Khamsins with a Shimano freehub for that money

    Got any links?
I am currently also looking for a wheelset for winter around this price or cheaper. Some options I have found are:
    - Mavic aksiums - €159
    - Khasmins - €149
    - Shimano WH-RS21 - €140

Ribble and merlin have a few of the above in and around the same price or cheaper.

I think these are decent value http://www.rosebikes.com/article/road-wheel-set-28700c-mavic-open-pro--105-5800/aid:401816

Pair of Mavic Open Pros on shimano 105 hubs with DT Swiss competition spokes. All very maintainable and decent quality.

Yeah, the Merlin offer was the one I was leaning towards.

I've done many thousands of kms on several sets of khamsins. One of the very few things I've ever purchased and wondered why they don't cost a lot more

Agreed. IMO the best value wheelset out there and with easily serviced/upgradeable bearings.

Ok that's brill. I had a devil of a time order replacement parts for the Tiagra hubs.

I'll check these out. Are they compatible with Shimano cassettes?

Strange it deosnt say on the page. Needs checking out as freewheels are easy to change but not cheap/easy to buy!

I reckon only Campy available as it doesnt list Shimano when you go to buy the wheels on their own.

You can change the freehub to accept Shimano.... I believe. However, Campag also build Shimano compatible Fulcrum wheelsets. The equivalent of the Khamsin is the Fulcrum 7.

Its a good idea to make sure the wheels have stainless steel spokes. I've found Mavic Aksiums/Ksyrium Equipes to have plain steel spokes which do rust over time. FWIW, I went for a set of Ultegra's recently - stainless steel spokes and anodized rims and hub shell. A little more expensive but they're solid, well recommended all year round wheels.

agree with the above re: the Khamsin's. Have them on one of my Winter bikes and a solid wheelset. absolute bargain if you ask me

Thanks for all these suggestions. I hadn't heard of the Campagnolo Khamsin. The reviews really talk it up.

Questions: are all Campagnolo Khamsin's hand-built? Is there any issues with using Campagnolo wheels with a Shimano freewheel (some threads said to buy Fulcrum instead of Khamsin as they're designed for Shimano freewheels).

    Khamsin versus Shimano RS31?

As posted above - you can buy these with either a campag or a Shimano / SRAM compatible freehub. Same for all campag and fulcrum wheelsets. You normally can select which you need on line - if there is no option to choose on ribble, I'd just call them. Their mail order is very good.

Was dithering between Khamsins and Fulcrum 7 when I had to make this decision myself and ended up with the Fulcrums. I've found them excellent and totally bombproof over many thousands of km on some pretty crappy roads. If you can't find the Khamsins they certainly make for a very good plan B.
