hair 'gadget' for putting hair in a bun etc.?

Hi,

I have longish straight hair that's also quite thick and heavy, and I've never been great at styling it. Whenever I try to put it up in something other than a ponytail, it only lasts for about 5 minutes or I can't get it to work at all. I've tried a few 'gadgets' (spirals/loops/etc) over the years to help put my hair in a bun or something, but nothing seems to work. I've a work thing coming up soon for which I want to look smart and put my hair up - does anyone have any recommendations for something that might actually work, and that's easy to use as well?

There are foam rings that you can get in Boots/Pennys/Dunnes etc, I think they are called doughnuts (or something like that). Tie your hair back in a ponytail, put the ponytail through the doughnut and then spread the hair over the doughnut to cover it. Pull a hair elastic over the Bun and then use the excess hair to cover the elastic and pin excess hair under the bun.

I use the penneys foam one, medium size- I put my ponytail through it and pull it right to the end of the ponytail and kind of spread out hair around doughnut as I continuously fold the doughnut down towards the base of my ponytail... It doesn't budge and covers hair tie and everything.

It's more stable this way as my hair is not ultra long yet so I wouldn't have enough to wrap around to cover elastic. I also feels that it moves around unless hair is folded into it. Seemingly this is called a sock bun and there are loads of tutorials on YouTube where you can use an old sock with the toe part cut off.
Maybe everybody knows this already, I am new to long hair so picking up loads of new ideas that I could never do before.

Dial Hard

Backcomb your hair a bit before you pin it around the donut too - if it's very straight it'll just slide around the place otherwise.
