Updating Samsung Note 10.1 firmware

When I plugged my Note 10.1 into my PC and fired up Kies, it told me there was a new firmware available, although when I tell the tablet itself to check for updates it said there are none.

According to the blurb "data may be lost" during the upgrade. Can anyone confirm whether this is Samsung speak for "data WILL be lost because we're going to blow the whole thing away" or whether it really does mean that it might be lost if something goes badly wrong?

I'm used to PC & other devices firmware where the upgrade leaves everything in place and has no adverse impact, but I've a nasty hunch that phones do things differently.
