Paris Motor Show

    Was over at the Paris motor show with the son at the weekend. Just some brief thoughts in case anyone is thinking of going...

    The exhibition centre is massive, over 1M Sq feet, very well organised. Split over 8 separate buildings, with 5-10 manufactures in each one, depending on size of each venue. The following are just random thoughts based on what we saw / experienced:-

    1. The French motor companies (Peugeot, Renault, Citron) were putting on a good show, with plenty of concept cars, great presentations, backed up by good stands. The Peugeot midsized concept sports looked great, in matt silver (see pic).

    2. Ford, nice to sit in the Fiesta ST, looked great in orange, the new Mustang 5.0 in yellow looked fab. New Mondeo much the same as current one. Overall the Ford stand was small and squeezed over to the side of the hall.

    3. Ferrari - couldn't get near, with all the lads snapping. Barriers completely surrounding all of the cars. Friends of dealers / serious buyers only allowed in. This was the same story for all of the super car / super lux brands (RR, Bentley, Aston, Lambo). Still the cars looked great, 458 special, California T.

    4. Alfa - very small stand and almost invisible, no public interest.

    5. Jeep, Cool stand, plenty of motors, all of the staff were great, relaxed and easy to talk to.

    6. Nissan, only one car to see here. The GTR Nismo. Looked evil in a good way !!!!. A big crowd of lads around it. One guy looked like he was crying watching the car revolve. :(

    7. Renault. Easily the best stand at the show. Massive area, massive screens and great light show. A "hill" built into the stage. Cars were "Meah", except for the twizy, which was easily getting the most attention.

    8. Pavilion 2.1 and 2.2 were motor accessory's, and we avoided these.

    9. Pavilion 3 - Mazda, Mazda 3, nice purposeful shape, same story with the Mazda 6. Strangely all of the Jap / Korean brands seemed to be largely ignored. It was easy to get into any of the cars here, no queuing etc.

    10. Hyundai - again little interest (relatively speaking). They seemed to just roll out their existing stock cars. Nothing special, no concepts.

    11. Kia, good stand. The proceed GT looked nice. The square Led lights were cool. Inside was a very nice place to sit. Dash excellent, graphic clear and visible.

    12. Pavilion 4. VAG. - Walked in the door and tripped over an Avantador, a Hurican and something else blue ??? OK stand, but only 3 cars on view. Again the Dearlers were doing the hard sell to a group of middle east guys.

    13. Audi - Packed Packed Packed. new TT looked good, also a 4 door TT ?

    14. VW - loads of cars, the new Passat looked nice, much more sporty that the current one, probably down to the fast that all of the Passats were R-Line models. Disappointed that there were no GTI or Golf R's. Lots of E-Golfs instead...

    15. Lexus, Nice cars and a cool oculus VR stand showing the new NX jeep.

    16 - Pavilion 5 - Mini, so many cars. Mini is no longer a small car, the 4 door retains the mini astatic, but it probably bigger that a Focus / Golf. Nice Cooper S' in all different guises.

    17. RR - Cant get near the cars, but it don't matter. Makes you feel poor and humble. Phantom looks suitably sublime.

    18. BMW - Biggest disappointment at the show. Stand was packed, but way to small for the number of cars they had. Lots of basic stock cars. 4 or 5 2 Series Active tourers (Small people carriers). The 4 series 4 door in matt grey did look lovely. X models all locked, no 7 series. Backing displays also very limited. Only 1 i8 but placed around the corner. ????

    19. Pavilion 5 - Opel, Almost as good a stand as Renault. Very cool backing display, music / presentation. Cars OK.

    20. Jaguar / Land Rover - Good idea. Again as these were premier brands the car area was restricted, however you could queue for 1-2 minutes and get access. As a result you felt a bit special. Both Jag and Land Rovers were all lovely and open. New disco looks great. The Models (girls) were beautiful and all smiling, also happy to pose for photos.

    21. Inifinity - Q70 very nice to sit in. Great sound damping. Q50 - again a nice place to sit if a little smaller.

    22. Mercedes - Again a very good display and plenty of motors . Again everything was open. A-Class, very plastic inside. new C class, nice car shape, but cheap interior ( compared the Q50 - 2 minutes before). AMG GT wonderful shape and very cool inside. The bonnet was open also. S Class, sat in the back of the S500 and "oh my god", full electric seat adjustment, lumbar support, head rest. If I was to bring home 1 car from the show it would have been the S class Coupe. Matt silver, brown leather interior, and fab looking.

    From 2008-2011, I went to see the Paris and Frankfurt motor shows (they alternate each year), so I can recognise most of the points you made.

    A few comments:
    • On home turf, you would expect French volume car makers to "push out the boat". For the Frankfurt motor show, all of the German car makers usually make an effort.
    • The Ferrari stand is always packed. That said, crowds at the Paris motor show are usually less hectic Monday-Friday.
    • China and US are the major growth markets for most of the big name brands, so the Shanghai and Detroit and LA motor shows have become somewhat more important than the various European motor shows. This can influence when certain car makers will launch certain new models. Equally, many car makers now like to launch new models outside of the motor shows calendar.

    While the globalisation of the car market is a big factor in the relative effort that manufacturers put into car shows, it was still interesting to gauge the companies that were expending the "most" expense / effort, at the show, with the understanding that Europe is indeed a mature market.

    As I mentioned the Renault, Opel, and Kia (and Citron to a lesser degree) were putting on the best show. While they obviously didn't have the best range of cars. Concepts, dazzle and customer service was top notch.

    BMW seemed to miss the mark by mostly putting out basic cars, and locking everything. Plus there was little or no sales people.

    Infinity, seem to be making a big push for Europe, great cars, and plenty of gloss.

    Jag / Land Rover, again got the customer interface piece just right.

    VW, Seat, Skoda, while each was OK, they were to VAG similar. They should have stuck a Bugatti stand in between :cool:...

    We went on the Friday and while it was busy, it was manageable.

    We walked past at midday on the Saturday and it was bedlam...

    Matt silver seemed to be the new colour of the show...

    Agree that the relative effort that manufacturers put into car shows is interesting. However, there is a lot of scepticism in the car industry about whether motor shows help sales.

    In various ways, Renault, Opel, and Citroen are all under pressure commercially, so it's in their interest to participate in any of the major European motor shows.

    BMW used to go OTT at certain motor shows - I recall the very elaborate BMW outdoor stand at the 2006 British motor show. To be fair, though, BMW has form with reusing exhibition stands, including at sports events, such as major yachting and golf events. Bear in mind too that BMW is on course to sell/deliver two million cars this year, so participating in motor shows might not be be its top sales and marketing priority this year.

    On a different topic, and from a buyers perspective, I found it useful to be able to sit in a very wide range of car's within minutes of each other.

    Dash "touch tests", close the door tests etc, only make sense when you can compare and contrast different modes in quick succession.

    I found the A-class to be very plastic, and the new C class not much better, where as the new Passat had a very re-assuring quality and door close "thud".

    also, from being too closely associated to the company and folks working there, BMW are insanely focused on meeting internal department budgetary targets, reducing costs and whatnot so you wouldnt be surprised if the launch of the 2 series "active swoosh whatever its called" has tapped the available funds for promotional activity and they havent bothered with splashing the cash on the Paris show.

    So the new Passat "sounds like a Golf" eh? :)

    A class is probably built to a budget unless you buy AMG version. That said, the new version of the A class seems to be drawing younger buyers to the Merc brand, so job done.

    The new C class had received lots of praise for its interior - it trumps current A4 and 3 series, apparently. Did you sit in a poverty spec C class?

    For the last few years, BMW has been focused on raising it operating margins - it had slipped way behind Audi and Merc. Remember that BMW is a publicly quoted company and it nearly went bust during the 1980s. The emphasis on margins has meant trimming lots of costs, notably getting out of F1.

    That said, BMW invested a lot of R&D money into EfficientDynamics and into the i sub-brand, including building up its carbon fibre reinforced plastic operation on the west coast of the US, and building new and expanded car manufacturing and assembly capacity in various countries.
