I am toying with the idea of buying a pbr heifer/in calf heifer. I have a few nice weanlings (double suckling cows) to sell after the herd test, presuming that goes ok and would use the proceeds from their sale to buy a heifer.
I have bred pb BA in the past but am now looking for a breed that is smaller and easier handled as I get on in the years and suits the land that I have in Longford.
I was also thinking of Dexters but I reckon that they are more a niche market.
I have always liked Shorthorns and had some brilliant SHxBA suckler cows in the past.
Basically I would like to get back into pedigrees at a level that I can manage myself and I think Shorthorns might suit me. Any advice would be appreciated especially when it comes to bloodlines or those to stay away from, recommended breeders, approximate prices etc.
Or am I off my head - should I reinvest my money in some nice HEx/AAx bull calves.

Why go purebred? Shorthorn really sell better as a cross. Bulls can be hard sold but heifers do well. I've 8 nice replacement limos I'm giving shorthorn to in feb/mar next year. Hoping for heifers.

I would like to get back into breeding again just for personal interest/enjoyment.
I understand what you are saying about crosses but I have no problem feeding on and killing bulls.
OH and I rear and feed cattle for the factory so a pb SH bull/bullock would just go into the mix.

    Hi Base Price,

SH make lovely stock absolutely not denying it

    BUT

If I was you I would go for Angus' for one reason & one reason only - Target Market - Dairy Farmers. Breed easy calving Angus' (with a few other targets - like short gestation, daughter milk & daughter calving ability)

If you want use SH on the AA - you'll have Blue Greys.....

I agree Shorthorn viable option is crossing with other breeds.
Shorthorn make great cows and mothers.

You could breed on the side. Maybe buy one shorthorn heifer off
a quality breeder, use AI and start.

The Flatley family in kilkelly Mayo are genuine breeders.

if you want breeders that I had good experience with pm me and provide
    the necessary contact info:)

Creaga Dice, Kilkelly Major are good blood lines to follow.

Have you any out of Cregga Dice?

He went from 4 stars in April 13 to 1 star on the latest maternal list for some reason.

I have decided to revert to the breed that I know best, all be it 10 years ago.
I have talked to a old friend (breeder) who has some of my original bloodlines and he is willing to sell me an in calf or maiden heifer.
All I need to do now is inform OH and get him on board

Easier ask forgiveness than permission .
I know a girl with a large suckler herd of charlaois and wanted to try a few speckled park on them but the husband wouldn't hear of it . When they were getting the AI man if the husband wasn't around she would use one or two SP unknown to him . I think she has two heifers ready for the bull now !
    Good luck with them

It is a bit complicated here, as I have my bit of land and he has more substantial acreage that we run as one enterprise.
HOWEVER, there is only one double bed in the house :D

If you like the shorthorn breed go with them, no point going with a breed your not particularly fond of. You say your from Longford ?? There's a breeder of shorthorns on the Cavan /Longford border Grousehall shorthorn which have being breeding them for as long I remember, might be worth contacting if your were serious about breeding /showing.
