How's it going, I'm 19 now and looking to get a toyota altezza which is a jap import, I had one at 18 and was insured via Third Party Extension, Liberty wouldn't transfer me onto it, But they would leave me drive it on the Third party, Stupid i know and don't make sense, I was wondering does anybody know who's good for insuring young lads on jap imports? Just don't want the hassle of ringing everybody, As i know for myself more then likely they'll tell me to f**k off

If you are talking about driving this car under your driving of other cars extension, you cannot do that for a car that you own.

i'm 34 with clean licence and full no claims bonus and i still struggle every year to even get a quote on a jap import evo,the best of luck lad

If you can find somewhere there will be a nice sum added to the quote.

Probably not exactly what you wanna read but, have you thought about an is200? Irish sold so has to be easier insure, good bit cheaper to buy, a little slower, but they've a nice straight 6, nicer interior (generally) and you can style it up or down as with the altezza...

There's a loading on jap imports as they're assumed to be modified and also higher risk as mostly they're eanted by younger male drivers who drive the sh1te out of them.

While you might not be that stereotype the imports generally attract this loading.

Buy the Irish version of the car, it will save u a load anyway.

My understanding was the loading was due to them being easier to rob ?

Nope. Even if the car is similar, say an AS200 vs IS200, there are differences, (for example, not necessarily on the is200) say minutely different headlamp lenses, minutely different wings, slightly different bumpers, different wiring looms to fog lights etc.
Technicalky they have to use the correct parts, which are main dealer only and a good but more expensive, this leads to higher repair costs.

I had an FTO where headlights were €800 each, and a quarter panel was €1600 IIRC.

Then you have the statistics which are likely to say that people who buy JDM cars over European ones are a higher risk anyway.

Not a chance you'll get insured on an Altezza without it costing an arm and a leg :(

Getting insured on jap cars here is stupid.

My wife really struggled to insure her jap import Nissan Micra. A1.3L automatic powerhouse. And she is 30 with full licence and 3 years NCB.

Altezza are a nice car but can you look at someting else or be prepared to fork out the mad money.

Only if the policy you're insured under allows third party extensions for young drivers. Many policies and insurers limit this to drivers over 23 or 25 given the high risk associated with drivers younger than that.

Not to be a killjoy but your chances are very slim to none (providing your unwilling to pay something ridiculous for 3rd).

Yes i know, But it'll save me a bit of hassle and waste of time.. It's what most people do is let you know who you'd have a chance of getting insured with..

As i stated at the start of the thread, I had one when i was 18.. I really enjoy how easy to drive they are for a 2.0 220bhp, They're alright on the jungle juice, And are just a good car overall, Had no problems with mine except for the power steering pump and maintaining the car.. So that's why i want another one :)

Using the word 'Jap' is considered derogatory by many, would it kill you to type 'Japanese'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

    220bhp?
Maybe when it was brand new coming out of the factory but a lot of them horses have escaped.
I've driven plenty and they can e fun to drive but with insurance, tax, and petrol they're expensive t have.
For a 2litre jap car there are plenty more out there that you'd equally have trouble getting insured on but that have more speed and are more fun to drive. Evo, subaru, Silvia.

Drove all 3 of those and they're great cars by any means alot of power and fast, But i'd kill myself in one.. Don't want to get one yet.

What's the point in getting a car that's way to fast for me.. Putting myself and others around me in danger as i wouldn't be able to handle anything that powerful at my age.. Just stupid and pointless.

It's down to the driver mate not the car.

I know.. Just don't see the point in getting a car like a s14, evo, impreza etc, Just get nothing but hassle off the public and gaurds.. As some people don't like young lads with nice cars, Never got any hassle with the altezza when i was 18.
