Hi i might be going to have a look at a Seat Leon 1.9TDI tomorrow and the seller has mentioned that the temp gauge has abit of a mind of it's own in that it doesn't stay at 90 degrees but rather floats in between 90 and 100 degrees,

He has said that it has never overheated and has been like that the last few months,

Would anyone have advice on what to look out for with it

    Thanks

Move on it might be simple fix like thermostat but it just as easily might not.

Had a car like that once turned out to be head gasket.

It's possible it's the temp sensor, there were problem with them in the VAG engines around then, if it hasn't been changed, cheap fix and handy enough job. Google temperture sensor for the 1.9.

Thanks for the replies, just waiting for a reply from the seller, he has mentioned that the engine code is ASV, how reliable are they and how would i check for a possible HGF on it

One of the better VAG engines the 1.9 fairly bullet proof if maintained properly, to check head gasket have a look at the oil on the dip stick, should be black if it looks like chocolate stay away have a look at the coolant res and check exhaust fumes make sure it not too smokey under hard accerlaration. Some smoke is ok it is a diesel after all.

have an 02 Audi A6 with the same problem. diagnosed a faulty gauge as I connected my diagnostics and took the temp read from the sensor and confirmed temp is fine, gauge is fooked. when it surges toward the red I just bang the top of the dash and it drops back to 90.

Went to see the car yesterday evening and wasn't impressed with it to be honest, i know it was cheap money but couldn't be bothered when the seller failed to tell me about the nice amount of rust on the front wing and arch, nice little smack down the passenger side door, noisy power steering and two front footwells that looked like paddling pools,

Had the car on the road for about 5mins and gave it abit of welly and the temp gauge shot up to nearly 110 degrees, the temp kinda stabilized when taking it easy but once you gave it some throttle it kept rising, also I'm sure there was more oil around the engine than actually in it

Appears coolant system has a bigger problem than just a sensor or thermostat.

Hate arriving to see a car the owner didn't honesty appraise. It waists everyone time.

My golf barely rises to 90,its usually below it,it passed the nct this way though only recently, sounds like the complete opposite to the op though
